ith this issue, our first of 2018, we are now in volume 30our 30th year as one of the earliest journals in the materials space. Thirty years ago, Prof. Leonard V. Interrante, the founding editor and editor-in-chief for 25 years, was on approach toward the launch of Chemistry of Materials in January of 1989. Certainly, materials chemistry had existed long before then, but authors would publish their work in journals scattered across chemistry, chemical engineering, and applied physics. It became obvious by the mid-1980s that the interest in, and rapid expansion of, the area justified a journal that could capture high quality materials chemistry papers in one place and serve as the core of a growing community of researchers. Interrante’s vision was prescient and timelyChemistry of Materials was one of the first of now dozens of materials journals that have sprouted up over the past 3 decades, and indeed, the area has grown at an explosive rate.

from 21% in 2010 to 26% in 2017. Many of these papers are collaborative, as suggested by the fact that the number of papers published with authors from Chemistry departments has remained relatively constant during the same period of time. It is only through the mastering of the chemistry of a given system that the functionality of many materials can be harnessed, and in integrated hybrid materials, I would argue that chemistry will always be a central component. Throughout the year, on approach toward our 30th birthday in 2019, we will be proudly sharing highlights from our past, shining the spotlight on authors who have published with us since the beginning, and interviewing the next generation authors who were born in the first year of issue 1 of Chemistry of Materials (1989). We will, of course, continue to publish the most remarkable advances in materials chemistry, as well as our special features such as our interviews with highly cited authors (our 1k Club of authors cited), our Up and Coming series of perspectives with early career authors, and our Methods/ Protocols, among others. It will be an exciting year leading up to our 30th Birthday, and we look forward to celebrating it with the materials chemistry community.

The focus of the journal has always been and will continue to be, as our name implies, the chemistry of materials, which is of critical importance for both applications of functional materials and to enable a fundamental understanding of their properties. I have heard colleagues joke at conferences that “everyone is becoming a chemist” due to the necessity of functionalizing materials with precise properties for applications such as organic electronics, nanoparticles that interact with complex biological systems, and switchable coatings, to name a few examples of many. Chemists are in demand. As can be seen in Table 1, the percentage of published papers in Chemistry of Materials with authors from Engineering departments has increased from 36% in 2010, to 52% in 2017.
