FOREWORD ADVANCES IN CHEMISTRY SERIES

The was founded i n 1949 by the A m e r ican C h e m i c a l Society as an outlet for symposia and collections of data i n special areas of topical interest that c o u l d not be accommodated i n the Society's journals. It provides a m e d i u m for symposia that w o u l d otherwise be fragmented because their papers w o u l d be distributed among several journals or not published at a l l . Papers are reviewed critically according to A C S editorial standards and receive the careful attention and processing characteristic of A C S publications. Volumes i n the maintain the integrity of the symposia on which they are based; however, verbatim reproductions of previously published papers are not accepted. Papers may include reports of research as w e l l as reviews, because symposia may embrace both types of presentation.

HOWARD G . BARTH is a senior research

associate of the Corporate Center for A n a lytical Sciences at the D u P o n t E x p e r i m e n tal Station i n W i l m i n g t o n , Delaware. Before j o i n i n g the D u P o n t Company i n 1988, he was a research scientist and group leader at Hercules Research Center. H e received his B . A . i n 1969 and his P h . D . i n 1973 i n analytical chemistry from N o r t h eastern University. H i s specialties include polymer characterization, size-exclusion chromaography, and high-performance l i q u i d chromatography. H e has published more than 70 papers i n these and related areas. Barth also edited the book Modern Methods of Particle Size Analysis (Wiley, 1984) and co-edited Modern Methods of Polymer Characterization (Wiley, 1991). H e has edited five volumes on polymer characterization published i n the Journal of Applied Polymer Science and co-edited two volumes i n the A C S Symposium Series. Barth was on the instrumentation advisory panel of Analytical Chemistry and was associate editor of the Journal of Applied Polymer Science. H e is cofounder and chairman of the International Symposium on P o l y m e r Analysis and Characterization. H e was recently appointed editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Polymer Analysis and Characterization (Gordon and Breach). Barth is past chairman of the Delaware Section of the American Chemical Society, and he presently serves as councillor. Barth is a member of the A C S Divisions of Analytical Chemistry, P o l y m e r Chemistry, Inc., and Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering, Inc.; the Society of Plastics Engineers; and the Delaware V a l l e y Chromatography F o r u m .
