MOLYBDENUM DISULFIDE a unique new material f o r . . . Lubricants — Moly Sulfide additives form films on metal surfaces that protect against wear after base lubricants have been removed by heat, pressure or motion. Laminar structure and low shear strength between slippage planes give coefficients of friction as low as 0.02. Suggested applications include automotive chassis greases, railway journal bearing greases, tool joint compounds, and roll neck bearing compounds.
LUBRICANT ADDITIVES
Electrical components — Moly Sulfide has interesting semiconducting and photo-, piezo-, and thermo-electric properties. It has been suggested for use in rectifiers, transistors, and other electrical devices.
ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS
Plastics and rubber — Moly Sulfide fillers increase dimensional stability and thermal conductivity, decrease cold flow and wear in molded and sintered nylon. They lower surface friction in phenolic laminates and rubber, prevent seizure of rubber on metals.
PLASTICS AND RUBBER FILLERS
Molybdenum chemicals—Moly Sulfide may serve as the raw material for a variety of other molybdenum chemicals. On heating, MoS 2 may be chlorinated to MoClr, or oxidized to Mo0 3 . Moly Sulfide dissolves in strong oxidizing acids, such as hot concentrated nitric and sulfuric, to form molybdenyl compounds. I t is oxidized under pressure by hot caustic solutions to form molybdates M 2 Mo0 4 .

CATALYSTS
Catalysts — Tetravalent Moly Sulfide is one of the active catalyst species in hydrogénation reactions involving hydrocarbons and sulfur. Usually this species is obtained by reduction of the hexavalent MoS 3 formed as a decomposition product of ammonium thiomolybdate. Work now in progress is aimed at utilizing naturally occurring, but purified and micronized MoS 9 .
