ue-creation" research as the split between technical assistance/product development and new business development research has come closer to 50/50. Stavropoulos says Dow's metallocene expertise is proof of the company's success with its R&D goals. Corson adds: "We really believe that ultimately w e can define a requirement in the marketplace for a polymer and model that back to what is the best polymer and back to what is the best process to produce that polymer. We do that now with Insite, but w e believe w e can do that sort of thing across a much broader part of our polymer business." Metallocene maven Gambrell says metallocene chemistry will soon allow Dow to launch a new line of ethylene-styrene polymers. "We can make anything from a semirigid plastic to an elastomer out of this material. This new material will allow us to participate in a whole realm of different markets from those now served by engineering polymers to elastomers" and even elastic fibers. It is on these latest polymer advances and others to come that Stavropoulos bases his plans to boost Dow's growth. The company will use its "technology, financial strength, global view, and the information of a global corporation" to make the company's global businesses operate successfully. But, says Stavropoulos, each of Dow's businesses must "create value for Dow Chemical Co. over the business cycle, or shift [its] business strategy" to another model such as a joint venture. If they don't create value, he warns, Dow might divest them.^

CMA initiatives set activist agenda Although he termed the U.S. chemical industry as "vibrant, successful, healthy, and growing," Chemical Manufacturers Association Chairman J. Lawrence Wilson outlined three initiatives that CMA will undertake to foster continuation of the industry's progress. At the association's 46th chemical industry conference held in Washington, D.C., earlier this month, Wilson, chairman and chief executive officer of Rohm and Haas, said that the gains in maturity and progress made by the industry have little to do with chemical innovation, but have been made by improving its performance, increasing its credibility, and changing the way the public thinks about it.

"We have learned to look up from our lab benches, to reach out beyond our plant gates to our neighboring communities, and we have found ways of linking up with others across the oceans to join in making this planet a better place to live," said Wilson. He cited CMA's Responsible Care program and the Chemical Transportation Emergency Center—CHEMTREC— as the industry's means to progress. But Wilson also summarized CMA's future initiatives: embracing sustainable development, establishing a health and envi-

ronmental research program, and taking a more active part in the political process. Wilson believes the chemical industry "is eminently qualified" to take part in the sustainable development debate—a debate on the integration of environmental, economic, and social concerns by governmental agencies, environmental groups, academicians, industries, and the public at large. "The chemical industry is qualified because w e understand technology and innovation, we understand the need to operate efficiently, and we
