Enhancing Research Communication
A
uthors of research articles to be published in this journal should be aware that manuscripts should be submitted to a new address as part of a strategy by ES&T editors to speed the publication of research articles. That address is: The Editor, Environmental Science & Technology, Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, School of Public Health, Room 131 Rosenau Hall, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-7400. The immediate goal in redirecting manuscripts to Chapel Hill is to cut six weeks from the time required to process the average manuscript. To achieve that goal in 1995, we will expedite the handling of manuscripts, encourage reviewers to do the same, and require authors to send revised manuscripts to us as quickly as possible. In the long term, we plan to examine new technologies for rapid publication and to choose those that will serve our readership while preserving ES&T's tradition of publishing only the best, peer-reviewed research. In this issue we are printing our revised Editorial Policy, Peer Review Guidelines, and Current Research Author's Guide (see pp. 144A-147A). We ask that authors and reviewers carefully review these documents because they contain some important changes and additions. These include: • Expanded guidelines for preparing research articles, Research Communications, Critical Reviews, and Environmental Policy Analysis articles. • Revised guidelines for the publication of research articles describing advances in environmental technology (see page 146A). • A description of the role of the offices of the Editor and the Associate Editors in the processing of a manuscript (see page 145A) • New directions for submitting manuscripts (see page 146A), including a request for fax and e-mail addresses of the corresponding author to facilitate communications. • A request that all authors submit a list of six key words to be used by Chemical Abstracts and the ACS electronic data system to track and reference manuscripts. • Reemphasis of the page limit for research manuscripts (25 doublespaced pages including figures, references, and tables). Authors should be aware that the editors plan to enforce this requirement more strictly than in the past. Extremely long articles will be summarily rejected. We who are privileged to be associated with ES&T as editors and editorial assistants realize we have an important responsibility to produce the very best journal combined with the most enlightening magazine that can be published. We realize, however, that you are being bombarded with more and more printed material and that you are approaching overload. We are determined, therefore, to provide you with only the best so that of all your environmental literature, ES&T will always be required reading.
