Books Science Foundation and Ashland Oil, Inc. 351 pages. Available from Janet Osteryoung, Program Director for Chemical Analysis, National Science Foundation, Washington, D.C. 20550 (202-632-4276) Presented in this paperbound government publication are the proceedings of a 2'/2-day workshop on analytical needs of coal liquefaction held in Ashland, Ky., August 21-23,1974. T h e workshop was organized by the National Science Foundation and Ashland Oil, Inc., as part of the series of NSF-sponsored workshops on energy-related problems. A total of 50 people from the oil industry, académie, and government participated. Each complete day of the workshop was divided into four working sessions. T h e first three sessions were for formal presentations of papers and discussion of these papers. T h e fourth session of each day and the last half day were for informal roundtable discussion. T h e 11 formal presentations include papers t h a t deal with analytical methods from conventional physical and chemical methods of analysis to sophisticated instrumental methods such as mass

spectrometry, IR, GC, H P L C , and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry to determine the composition of liquids and gases derived from coal. At the outset of the workshop, J. V. Fox of Ashland Petroleum gave the only nonanalytical presentation to review the present status of the liquefaction process along with a possible time table for commercialization. T h e format of this report is exactly as presented in the workshop.

STP 618. 64 pages. 1977. $7.00 T h e five selected papers on flameless atomic absorption collected in this volume were originally presented at a

symposium at the 78th annual meeting of A S T M in J u n e 1975. They highlight the potential of the flameless atomic approach but include some recent advances in the field of inductively coupled plasma-emission spectroscopy as well.

Company Manual Infrared Methods in Air Analysis (part number 993-9236). Mary V. Zeller. 125 pages.
