Abstract

We investigated aquaculture production of Asian tiger shrimp, whiteleg shrimp,

26

giant river prawn, tilapia and pangasius in Bangladesh, China, Thailand and

27

Vietnam using life cycle assessments (LCAs), with the purpose of evaluating the

28

comparative eco-efficiency of producing different aquatic food products. Our

29

starting hypothesis was that different production systems are associated with

30

significantly different environmental impacts, as the production of these aquatic

31

species differs in intensity and management practices. In order to test this

32

hypothesis, we estimated the systems global warming, eutrophication and

33

freshwater ecotoxicity impacts. The contribution to these impacts and the overall

34

dispersions relative to results were propagated using Monte Carlo simulations and

35

dependent sampling. Paired testing showed significant (p
