Compounds That Promote Seed Germination March Featured Molecules The two molecules for this month come from the section Compound in Smoke Provides the Spark for Germination in the article “Research Advances” by Angela G. King (pages 346–348). These molecules have been demonstrated to stimulate seed germination under various conditions. The butenolide moiety is frequently encountered in natural products. An interesting approach to the synthesis of such molecules can be found at http://www.morphochem.de/upload/ 3158_Butenolide.pdf (accessed January 2005). Fully manipulable (Chime) versions of these and other molecules are available at the Only@JCE Online Web site: http://www.JCE.DivCHED.org/JCEWWW/Features/ MonthlyMolecules/2005/Mar
