Construction of Irradiation Bins

The bins, each measuring 48 X 36 X 18 in. and painted flat black inside, are constructed of '/,-in. Masonite and equipped with a valved water inlet and outlet, lamp power cable, nitrogen inlet, and exhaust fan. The compartments are closed by large Masonite panels held in place by a number of metal turn screws. 11 12 P1 S1 SW1 SW2 SW3 V1

A pressure-sensing switch (SW3) monitors water outflow and prevents the high voltage lamp circuit from being energized until a minimum cooling water flow is established in the circulating system. Should water pressure drop (due either to a change in utilities pressure or-more disastrously-to a broken water hose or cracked reaction vessel) power is removed from the lamp and water flow is stopped (Vl) to prevent possible flooding. In addition, a green "in use" signal light (Ll), mounted outside the comptartment, is extinguished and a red "trouble" light (L2) is turned on. The high intensity lamp circuit must be re-energized and the valve re-opened manually by means of the momentary-on pushbutton (SW2). This work was carried out under NSF grant GP-13085 with the kind permission of Dr. Jerrold Meinwald.
