CONTAINERS Small M e t a l Pellet Makes Aerosols Reusable A pressure-spray container developed by Wolco Products can b e refilled by the consumer himself. This allows pur chase of such refill materials as sprays and deodorants in bulk. T h e new container consists essentially of three parts: the container itself, a plastic screw-on type cap, and a bulletshaped metal pellet containing carbon dioxide. The pellet is housed in a mechanism in plastic cap and contains enough carbon dioxide to empty con tents of one container. Supplies, which are readily inserted in plastic cap, may be purchased separately.

a n d carburetors requires frequent dis p e n s i n g of m e r c u r y into manometer tubes. Squeezing sides of bottle permits a controlled s t r e a m of mercury which can b e directed into an orifice of almost any size. Because of its success with this t y p e bottle, Rochester Products is also using it to hold strong acids, bases, poisonous solutions, and flammables u p to 50° C.

Charge-A-Can disposable refrigerant containers has b e e n introduced by Eston Chemicals. Similar to six-pack carrying containers used b y beverage companies, p a c k a g e is finding its first use in the chemical industry. Carbon enables easier storing of cans and p r o vides convenient carrier for refrigerant service man. C 2 • S e a l i n g t a p e for cartons, paper t u b e ends, and bundles is offered by Permacel Tape. Known as Ρ 17, t a p e is paper-backed and impregnated with waterproof r u b b e r resin composition. C o m p a n y says it is designed to with stand extremely rough h a n d l i n g in ship ment under b o t h dry and wet condi tions. Tape does not split or tear at package closure points and requires no activating solvent. C 3

New device is adaptable to a variety of package design possibilities. In most instances, manufacturer can con tinue to use his present type of con tainer and his regular filling line. Wolco Products cites several advan tages of this type container including rriinimurn product dilution which avoids loss of flavor or essence, and elimination of dependence on more costly propellants. Polyethylene bottles are serving as containers a n d dispensers for mercury. Foxboro is using a polyethylene squeeze bottle produced by Plax to package virgin mercury for industrial flow meters. Although mercury pours freely, the squeeze action permits a firmer grip and prevents spillage and waste of the liquid. A screw-type plastic cap provides tight closure and keeps mer cury free from dust and contamination. General Motors Rochester Products division is also using a collapsible poly ethylene bottle both to contain and dis pense mercury. Testing fuel p u m p s CHEMICAL

• P a c k a g i n g m a c h i n e introduced by Stokes and Smith is designed for the accurate automatic packaging of items not suitable for volumetric filling. Unit features a battery of n e t weight scales. Use of these multiple scales permits machine, the Stokeswrap, to maintain filling speeds u p to 6 0 packages per m i n u t e . Accuracy of fill is assured by m e a n s of bulk and dribble feed. Com pany says m a c h i n e is i n t e n d e d to a n s w e r problems inherent in t h e filling of m a n y free-flowing and mixed ma terials. Wiessner is designed for prod ucts w h i c h require packaging in stand ard çjuart or gallon size double-tight, friction-top containers. Closing tool is of aluminum construction and consists of t w o steel handles, t o p p e d with nonslip ball-shaped hand grips, which offer necessary leverage for tight sealing. Closing tool is 12 times faster than h a n d closing methods, company says, and was designed for small batch runs, laboratories, a n d manufacturers w h o do not h a v e automatic closing machinery.
