LONG-RANGE PL-AN of Fisher Scien-

**· tific has come t o fruition with the introduction of Gram-Pac, tough, lami nated envelopes for packaging Fisher lot-analyzed reagents. Developed by Fisher's Clifford A. Flanders, who pre dicts that the new package will create a minor economic revolution for chem ists in institutes, industrial laboratories, and universities, the first Gram-Pac will he in chemists' hands this week. It will contain Fisher Certified Reagent sodium tartrate dihydrate, a moisture standard for the Karl Fischer reagent.

more expensive reagents, 5 or 10 grams to the Pac. Ten Pacs will make up a box, and 12 boxes a case. The 2 5 gram units will contain a minimum of 25 grams (they are machine-packed to tolerances of a few tenths of a g r a m ) . The analyst will still have to weigh the precise amount needed. Gram-Pacs will also prove conven ient for schools, many of which now spend hours placing small quantities of chemicals in vials for student use. Another advantage of Gr :m-Pac is that it makes it possible to eliminate high costs associated with the tradi tional quarter-pound bottle. With ap proximately 95r/r of the country's uni versity laboratories using semimicro techniques, Gram-Pac becomes particu larly timely. One box can be distrib uted to at least 10 different labora tories, and each chemist is assured of receiving his own individual package, sealed at the factor v. C 1

a wide range of granular and powdered free flowing materials. In operation, valve bag is placed on a filling tube and a starter button pressed. When prede termined weight is reached, downward pressure of filling tube operates a microswitch which immediately stops flow of material. Other features are agitating feed hopper and dust-tight electrical fittings. C2 ί Fiber pack container will replace the familiar wooden keg for the bulk ship ment of iodine after Nov. 1, says D o w Chemical. New package will mse two polyethylene liners—one within the other—to assure protection agaimst ab sorption of product on walls of outside container. Tough fiber outer drum will have lift-off lid and outer surface will be water-resistant. Package has 10-gal. capacity with tare weight of 7 lb. and is J9 in. high and 12.5 in. in diam eter. Ammonium Nitrate Emerges from Packing Line

Coordinator of Fisher's chemical manu facturing division, CliflEord A. Flanders holds conventional one-pound bottle of sodium tartrate dihydrate. On lab bench is the equivalent weight in the new GramPac envelopes, which Flanders developed

Representatives of Lion Oil and Fulton Bag & Cotton Mills watch some of the first bags of ammonium nitrate emerge from packing line at Lion's new $31-miîlion Barton plant, Luling, La. Fulton multiwall paper bags were supplied from company's nearby New Orleans plant. Viewing operation are (left to right) J. Frank Greeley, Fulton multiwall paper bag division; William G. East, purchasing agent for Barton plant; Louis J. Even, Fulton sales representative; Jason M. Elsas, vp and New Orleans manager for Fulton; and R. L. Van Zandt, Lion's Barton plant superintendent

Fisher plans eventually to market al most all of its Certified Reagents in Gram-Pacs, including the nearly 200 chemicals for which ACS has estab lished specifications. Flanders* re searchers are already experimenting with the packaging of liquids and hy groscopic materials in the new package and expect to announce a variety of Gram-Pac reagents in the near future. The Gram-Pac package is triplylaminated. A n innermost layer of poly ethylene protects the chemicals from contamination. Laminated to the poly ethylene is a middle layer of aluminum foil; outer surface is a layer of acetate. The result is a tough, moisture-resist ant, light-resistant, disposable con tainer. The least expensive reagents will b e packaged 2 5 grams to a Gram-Pac; 4422

for packaging fine mesh, dry products such as rodenticides, fertilizers, and other chemicals, bag has a natural or supercalendered bleached kraft outer shell and a liner of kraft or pouch stock capable of being laminated for extra protection. Bottom closure is both heat-sealed a n d folded and pasted. Strip of thermoplastic material attached to inside top of bag allows user to form same heat seal and folding at top. C4 • Flexible lining material said to combine excellent chemical, physical, and electrical characteristics has been developed by Kaykor Industries. Designated Vyflex L-10, lining is based on polyvinyl chloride resins and may be used to protect tanks, fume ducts, tank cars, and equipment used for mixing, storing, washing, and transporting of corrosive materials. Company says it resists corrosive action from common acids, alkalies, salts, organic compounds, and oxidizing acids. Material's elasticity prevents cracks caused by thermal expansion and contraction; it may be applied to steel, wood, or concrete. C5 • Two p a p e r specialty p l a n t s have been completed and p u t into operation by Bemis. Equipped to manufacture paper covers and liners for packaging articles of unusual shapes and sizes, plants are located at Crossett, Ark., and Albion, Ν. Υ. Crossett plant houses an entirely new operation while the Albion plant is a new building constructed to expand and modernize manufacturing facilities Bemis has had at Albion for several vears.
