Continued Growth in 2017

You will continue to see a series of special issues appearing this year that should be quite exciting in capturing emerging and important areas in our discipline. In 2016, the journal was present at all major meetings of the biomaterials community. In collaboration with the Canadian Society of Biomaterials, we established the “ACS Biomaterials Science & Engineering Best Student Paper Award”. These awards were presented to two student members of the society with the top scoring abstracts for oral presentations at their 2016 annual meeting at the World Biomaterials Congress. We hope to continue our efforts to recognize more members of our community for their extraordinary contributions to advance biomaterials research. s we enter our third year, we want to update you on the evolution of our efforts as the journal continues to grow and impact the biomaterials community. These efforts are due to our robust growth over the first two years and our excitement over the role we can play in terms of science and engineering communication among those in the field. During this past year, we announced subsections for articles published in the journal. This was prompted by a number of factors, including the breadth of our scientific coverage and to aid readers in navigating submissions and retrieval of topical papers. We now have the following headings, now available in the journal starting with this issue, which are selected by authors upon submission of their manuscript (at the discretion of the Editors) via a dropdown menu: Characterization, Synthesis, and Modifications; Modeling and Informatics Tools; Biointeractions and Biocompatibility; Controlled Release and Delivery Systems; Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine; Imaging and Diagnostics; Interfaces, Optics, and Electronics; Applications and Health; Manufacturing, Technology, and Devices; and Emerging Trends. We are also excited to introduce a new Methods and Protocols manuscript type to the journal this year. We felt this would be a welcome addition to provide readers key method and protocols in more recipe-like formats, along with videos, to give more direct “how-to” coverage of current topics. This is not just a first for our journal but also the first time ACS Publications is introducing Methods and Protocols content in a more visible and easily discoverable new format. We look to grow this section as a value-added resource for the biomaterials field and welcome your submissions for techniques used in biomaterials research that would help impact the broader community. We have also expanded the expertise on our editorial team and advisory board. In particular, during this past year we added four new Associate Editors, to expand on our founding three members. The new additions include: Prof. Rinti Banerjee (Department of Biosciences & Bioengineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India) with expertise in nanomedicine; Prof. Huaping Xu (Key Laboratory of Organic Optoelectronics and Molecular Engineering, Department of Chemistry, Tsinghua University, China) with expertise in polymers for drug delivery; Prof. Lorenz Meinel (Chair for Drug Formulation and Delivery, University Würzburg, Germany) with expertise in drug delivery systems; and Prof. Suzie Pun (Department of Bioengineering, University of Washington) with expertise in gene delivery and molecular imaging. We are very pleased that such an accomplished group of scientists has joined the effort to continue to help us move the journal forward with maximal impact for our field. This year we also published our very first special issue in the October issue of the journal, titled “3D Printing of Biomaterials” http://pubs.acs.org/toc/abseba/2/10/, edited by Jordan S. Miller, Rice University, and Associate Editor Jason Burdick. The special issue includes 5 expert reviews and 12 original articles along with a podcast interview with Jordan © 2017 American Chemical Society
