Books and Halogenated Hydrocarbons in the Aquatic Environment, which was held in May 1978. The papers are divided into five categories: two plenary session addresses given by J. P. Bruce and 0. Hutzinger; quantitative analytical results (11 papers); analytical methods (12 papers); incidence, monitoring and pathways (9 papers); and drinking water, health and biological effects (13 papers). Analytical Methods for Coal and Coal Products, Vol. III. Clarence Karr, Jr., Ed. xvii + 641 pages. Academic Press, Inc., 111 Fifth Ave., New York, N.Y. 10003. 1979.$55
This book is the last of three volumes on analytical methodology for coal and coal products. This volume is divided into four sections: analysis of gases (4 chapters); waste product streams and environmental problems (4 chapters); special instrumental techniques (7 chapters); and by-product utilization (4 chapters). The special instrumental techniques covered include fast-neutron activation analysis, electron probe microanalysis, X-ray fluorescence, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and pulse and multiple pulse nuclear magnetic resonance.
Continuing Series Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Vol. 8. R. J. Abraham, et al. xxxiv + 351 pages. The Chemical Society, Burlington House, London W1V OBN, England. Available from Special Issue Sales, American Chemical Society, 1155 16th St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036. 1979. $57.75
This volume reviews the NMR literature published between June 1977 and May 1978. Seven of the 12 chapters retain their previous titles and scope. Two chapters, multiple resonance and the solid state, have been expanded to include advances in experimental techniques. There is a new chapter on the application of NMR to conformational analysis. Finally, there are two biennial chapters in this volume: the NMR of oriented molecules, and liquid crystals and micellar solutions. Electrophoresis: A Survey of Techniques and Applications, Part A: Techniques. Z. Deyl, Ed. xiv + 390 pages. Elsevier Scientific Publishing Co., 52 Vanderbilt Ave., New York, N.Y. 10017. 1979. $83
This book is Vol. 18 in the Journal of Chromatography Library series. In this first of two volumes on electro-
phoresis, the editors have emphasized general aspects of the techniques and details regarding instrumentation. Applications will be dealt with in the second volume. General principles of electrophoresis are discussed in the first four chapters of Part A. The rest of this volume is devoted to coverage of specific techniques, including zone electrophoresis, the moving boundary method, isoelectric focusing, continuous electrophoresis, isotachophoresis, and deviation electrophoresis. The last five chapters deal with preparative techniques.
