Analytical Methods for Use in Geochemlcal Exploration. R. E. Stanton. 52 pages. Edward Arnol Publishers Ltd., 25 Hill St., London W1X 8LL, England. 1976. Paperbound. £2.20 T h i s volume succeeds a previous publication by S t a n t o n in 1966 t h a t dealt exclusively with colorimetric methods of analysis. Unlike the first publication, the present volume devotes less t h a n half of its space to colorimetric methods and introduces new chapters on instrumental methods t h a t have become more readily available in recent years. There are chapters on atomic absorption and x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and a chapter on emission spectroscopy contributed by C. H. James. Also added in this volume is a chapter on cold extraction methods. T h e procedures are written in sufficient detail to enable

Atlas of Carbon-13 NMR Data. E. Breitmaier, G. Haas, and W. Voelter. Plenum Publishing Corp., 227 West 17th St., New York, N.Y. 10011. 1976. $59.50 This handsomely packaged threering binder volume is the first installm e n t of a series which promises t o compile all reasonably verified carbon-13 N M R data from the available literature. T h e data reported in the earlier literature are largely chemical shifts. Only more recently have couplings a n d spin-lattice relaxation been reported. T h i s first volume for 1003 compounds therefore reports data on chemical shifts and assignments only. T h e subsequent volumes will present couplings and relaxation data. Extensive indexing is provided at the end of the text for easy cross-referencing. Alphabetical, chemical class, molecular formula, molecular weight, and chemical shift indexes are included.

Continuing Series Chromatographic Science Series, Vol. 7: Fundamentals of Integrated GC-MS. Benjamin J. Gudzinowicz, Michael J. Gudzinowicz, and Horace F. Martin. Part I: Gas Chromatography, vii + 382 pages. Part II: Mass Spectrometry, vii + 326 pages. Marcel Dekker, Inc., 270 Madison Ave., New York, N.Y. 10016. 1976. $37.50 (Part I) and $35.75 (Part ID T h e purpose of this volume is to describe in very basic terms the fundamental principles of integrated G C M S - c o m p u t e r instrumentation. Therefore, by design, the volume is divided into three separate parts. T h e first two parts deal with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. T h e texts are devoted primarily to review of general theory and basic principles of techniques. However, many illustrations of actual applications and tables of data for each instrumental technique are also provided to enable the reader to appreciate the limitations and potentials ascribed to each method. T h e contents of the two parts include: fundamentals of gas-liquid chromatography; detectors—operating principles and theory; qualitative methods for molecular structure determination by gas chromatography; mass spectrometry: general theory,

Books principles, and instrumentation; and qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis by mass spectrometry.

Reproduced in this volume are se lected papers on development in two areas of thermal analysis: differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetry. T h e book is divided into two parts. Papers on differential thermal analysis and differential scanning calorimetry are presented in P a r t I with the editors' introductory remarks. This part contains 25 papers pub lished in the literature from 1887 to 1970 and arranged in semichronological order. In P a r t I I 1 1 contributions on thermogravimetry are grouped in chronological order following the edi tors' introductory comments. Publica tion dates range from 1915 to 1971. Electroanalytical Chemistry, Vol. 9. Allen J. Bard, Ed. χ + 265 pages. Mar cel Dekker, Inc., 270 Madison Ave., New York, N.Y. 10016. 1976. $36.50

As has been the case with most of the previous volumes devoted to the review of a few topical areas, this vol ume concentrates on an in-depth re view of two areas of electroanalytical chemistry. T h e first chapter on chemisorption at electrode surfaces is con tributed by Ronald Woods of Victoria, Australia. This chapter provides a critical review of the work carried out in determining t h e nature of t h e hy drogen and oxygen layers on noble metals and discusses in detail the in-

formation these studies have provided with respect to the fundamental prop erties of the noble metal surfaces. T h e introduction sections deal with ad sorption in general and present some experimental aspects of studies at the electrode/solution interface. In the following sections, platinum metal is discussed at considerable length since this metal has received t h e greatest at tention. Discussion of the other metals is limited largely to t h e differences in their adsorption behavior from t h a t of platinum. Finally, a brief outline of the influence of the adsorption of hy drogen and oxygen on other processes occurring at noble metal electrodes is presented. Chapter two, written by Arnim Henglein of Germany, is enti tled "Pulse Radiolysis and Polarography: Electrode Reactions of ShortLived Free Radicals". T h e introduc tion section stresses the importance of the polarographic behavior of short lived free radicals, not only for the purpose of detection and identifica tion of these radicals, b u t also from the point of view of the kinetics of electrode reactions. T h i s chapter, much shorter t h a n the other, is divid ed into four sections on description of the method, kinetics of radical reac tions, theoretical considerations about polarographic waves of radicals, and polarograms and electrode reactions of various radicals. T h e book is a good quality reproduction of typewritten text.

T h e new edition of P a r t 42 presents A S T M standards on emission spec troscopy, molecular spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, chromatography, resinography, and microscopy. Of the 61 standards, 14 are new, revised, or changed in status since the 1975 edi tion. Among the new standards are a proposed method for spectrographic analysis of unalloyed copper by the briquet D-C arc technique, and pro posed practices for sampling of alumi n u m and its alloys for spectrochemical analysis.
