Foreword I H E A C S S Y M P O S I U M SERIES was first p u b l i s h e d i n 1974 to p r o v i d e a m e c h a n i s m for p u b l i s h i n g s y m p o s i a q u i c k l y i n b o o k form. T h e purpose o f this series is to p u b l i s h comprehensive books developed f r o m s y m p o s i a , w h i c h are usually "snapshots i n t i m e " o f the current research b e i n g done o n a topic, plus some r e v i e w material o n the


topic. F o r this reason, it is necessary that the papers be p u b l i s h e d as q u i c k l y as possible. Before

a symposium-based b o o k is put under

contract,

the

proposed table o f contents is r e v i e w e d for appropriateness to the topic and

for

comprehensiveness

o f the

collection.

Some

papers

are

e x c l u d e d at this point, and others are added to r o u n d out the scope o f the v o l u m e . In addition, a draft o f each paper is peer-reviewed p r i o r to final acceptance

or rejection. T h i s anonymous r e v i e w process

is

supervised b y the organizer(s) o f the s y m p o s i u m , w h o become the editor(s) o f the book. T h e authors then revise their papers a c c o r d i n g to the recommendations o f both the reviewers and the editors, prepare camera-ready c o p y , and submit the final papers to the editors, w h o c h e c k that a l l necessary revisions have been made. As

a rule, o n l y o r i g i n a l research papers and o r i g i n a l r e v i e w

papers are

i n c l u d e d i n the

v o l u m e s . V e r b a t i m reproductions

p r e v i o u s l y p u b l i s h e d papers are not accepted.
