COOPERATIVE VENTURE BEGINS Members of the ACS Division of industrial and Engineering Chemistry vote overwhelming support of close working relationship
n the November 1963 issue of Industrial and Engineering
I Chemistry, an editorial describes a proposal for closer cooperation between the publication and the Division of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry of the American Chemical Society. Since then, the Division’s members have voted overwhelming approval of the proposal. Beginning with this issue, therefore, the proposal is implemented. We are confident this joint venture will improve the dissemination of scientific and technical information in the fields of industrial chemistry and chemical technology through both the publication and the Divisional activities. The Division has automatically accepted as members all ACS members in the United States and Canada who subscribe to I&EC. A card identifying you as a member of the Division will be found on page 59. This card must be validated by attaching to it in the space provided the address label on the mailing wrapper from any of your 1964 issues of I&EC. As of January 1, 1964, there are no Divisional dues. Special arrangements have been made to extend Division membership to ACS members who reside outside the U.S. and Canada. These individuals should write to the Division Secretary for further information. The publication is placing three representatives of the Division on its Editorial Advisory Board to give the

Division a more effective voice in editorial planning. I n addition, the publication will provide financial assistance for projects and programs developed cooperatively by the Division and the publication and will publicize Divisional activities. The Division has appointed the Director of Publications, Applied Journals, to its Executive Committee in order to have the benefit of his advice in its planning of Divisional activities. I n addition, the Division will sponsor special symposia the editors feel will be of particular value to the readers of the publication. A Significant Move. The Applied Publication staff and the executive committee of the Division consider this cooperative effort a momentous step. O n both sides we recognize that although traditional approaches to technical meeting programs and technical publications are still the foundation on which dissemination of technical information rests, they place the burden of organization of knowledge on individuals already pressed for time and swamped with detailed information. We propose to attack the problem of organizing applied chemical knowledge into cohesive bodies of technology in both our programs and our publication. We welcome into Division membership all of you who have not previously been active and hope you h ill become participants with us in Divisional and publication affairs.
