Infrared Spectroscopy Courses The University of Minnesota is again offering two courses in infrared spectroscopy. The first course, Tech niques of Infrared Spectroscopy, will run from July 10 through July 14; the second course, Chemical Interpretation of Infrared Spectra, will run from July 16 through July 20. The courses are related, but operate independently and participants may register for either or both. The lecture courses begin with the fundamentals and carry through to include recent developments; discus sion seminars provide opportunity for treatment of advanced topics. Partici pants should have at least basic train ing in chemistry and physics, but not necessarily experience in spectroscopy. The techniques course will include lectures on basic optics and instrument theory, instrument design, sample preparation, and laboratory techniques exploiting the capabilities of modern instruments and accessories. Labora tory work will provide experience in these techniques, acquainting partici pants with prism and grating infrared spectrometers, both single and double beam, with the near infrared, with Ρ aman spectroscopy, and with gas eous, liquid, solid, and plastic samples. Experience will be provided with all of the most modern commercially avail able spectrometers, both infrared and Raman. The interpretation course lectures will provide systematic coverage of the group frequencies useful in chemi cal diagnosis and structure determina tion, as well as lectures on the factors giving rise to these group frequencies and their variations, and the practical use of infrared in day-to-day chemical work. In the afternoon sessions, indi vidual practice will be provided in the interpretation of a graded set of typi cal spectra of "unknowns" with appro priate guidance and counsel. Standard catalogs of spectra will be available and their use will be explained. Enrollment for each course is limited.
