Dynamic hydrogen electrode, based on one described by J. Giner, J. Electrochem. Soc. I l l , 376 (1964), is designed to provide stable reference potential even under extremely adverse conditions. The principle of operation is the evolution of hydrogen on a platinum electrode at a controlled constant current. The stable potential resulting is just a few mV more negative than that of the Standard Hydrogen Electrode. The electrode is useful in strongly acidic or basic electrolytes and at elevated temperatures; it can be used in kinetics studies, for polarography, battery investigations, and with ion-selective electrodes. $195. A new mass spectrometer, which weighs less than 2 oz, can analyze the composition of gases in dilute concentrations where the total pressure may be one thousand trillion times less than normal atmospheric pressure. The analyzer section of the spectrometer—fabricated from coarse wire mesh —produces a three-dimensional quadrupole electric field that traps ionized gases selectively according to their masses. The detection system is based on a conventional electron multiplier. Applications include its use in space probes, air pollution monitoring, and blood gas or respiratory analysis. Instrumentation based on the design should cost hundreds rather than thousands as is now true of mass spectrometers. The new mass spectrometer has a mass resolution of 75. General Electric, P.O.
