WITCHCRAFT or source without sorcery Seems like witchery to some, but it's no dark secret that the people in our Special Apparatus Department are just fellows long on sleight of hand and experience when it comes to manipulating low-expansion glass. Conjure up what you will in the way of tortured twists in tubes. Make a rough drawing of your most weird device. These fellows will stay with you, and you'll get what you want. It will be PYREX brand glass No. 7740, too. Lots of plotting went into it to give it high stability and low expansion. For run-of-the-mill oddities, scan our brand-new catalog: "Custom Made Laboratory Glassware by Corning," 116 pages, listing 5,755 special pieces of glass. Not there? Send a sketch, we'll make it for you fast. The coupon will get you the catalog.

Laboratory, has a slave wrist action prac tically duplicating human wrist motion. It allows the operator to perform highly complex hot-cell operations with rela tive ease and complete safety, accord ing to the manufacturer. The manipulator has a sensitive touch, yet is capable of handling weights up to 30 pounds. I t is available in a variety of tube lengths to fit shielding walls for both high-level and low-level hot cells, and has a " Z " motion of either 36 or 39 inches and a full slave arm length of approximately 7 feet. Each unit includes an interchangeable general-purpose tong and through -wall tube shielding and is available in both left- and right-hand models. 14 Testing Chamber A small-sized, multipurpose testing chamber, called the Tenney-Mite, is being produced by Tenney Engineering, Inc. For use in labs and medium-sized shops, the chamber operates as a com plete low or high temperature testing unit, a bath, or a laboratory oven. With an interior capacity of 1.5 cubic feet, it is recommended for metal treat ing and tool chilling, for testing instru ments and electronic components, and for pharmaceutical storage and preser vation. Low temperature ranges availableare - 4 0 ° , -100°,and - 1 2 0 ° F . 15 Polyethylene Bottle Carriers Polyethylene bottle carriers, designed to protect acid-filled glass bottles or carboys from breakage, have been de veloped by American Agile Corp. The standard unit will hold a 5-pint acid bottle and has a centering ring which allows the bottle to be packed with ice or other coolant and also protects it from shock. In addition to its standard line of carriers, the company offers units designed to meet individual specifica tions. 16

A new line of low-cost valves for use on tubing and designated the TubeLine has been developed by Auto clave Engineers, Inc. The valve can be cut into lines faster and more easily than conventional screw-end valves, according to the company. Pipe threading is eliminated; the tubing is cut to the desired length with a hacksaw and the burrs are filed off. An adaptor nut and sleeve are then slipped onto the tubing and connected to the valve. The valves are available in four sizes : Ve inch o.d. X Vie inch i.d.; 1/i inch For further information, see coupon on page 61 A ANALYTICAL
