Educ. 2000, 77, 1358-1360 In our paper “Pólya’s Isomer Enumeration Method: A Unique Exercise in Group Theory and Combinatorial Analysis for Undergraduates”, we stated that no articles on isomer enumeration have appeared in this Journal explicitly citing the works of Pólya. This is incorrect. An article was published in the April 1988 issue of J. Chem. Educ. by Balaban, Kennedy, and Quintas. Their paper, “The Number of Alkanes Having n Carbons and a Longest Chain of Length d: An Application of a Theorem of Pólya” (J. Chem. Educ. 1988, 65, 304–313), demonstrates algorithms to elucidate all structural isomers of alkanes. It is yet another example of how combinatorial mathematics and chemistry can come together in the classroom. We apologize for the accidental overlooking of this excellent and in-depth paper. S.
