SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITIES Main Field. Physical Chemistry. Innovative computational methodologies mostly based on ab initio methods. Modeling of complex material systems and phenomena. Interaction lightmatter. Chemical reactivity. Among the major achievements: (1) Introduction in quantum chemistry of (a) the molecular electrostatic potential (1969−1980), of the molecular polarization function (1975− 1980) and of computational methods for their use in prediction and interpretation of molecular structure and intermolecular interactions (b) the intermolecular energy decomposition (1969− 1983) and of the counterpoise corrections to the separate decomposition terms (1985−1992) (c) the hybrid QM/MM models for intermolecular and solute−solvent interactions (1972−1978) (d) ab initio QM codes for solvation effects based on apparent surface charges on the solvent boundary (1981−2000) (2) Formulation of the first general program for (a) the decomposition of the molecular charge distribution into localized contributions (1969) and the codification of its use (1969−1998) (b) the (first) full ab initio study of a reaction mechanism, in the gas phase (1972) and in solution (1982) (c) the (almost) complete set of second- and thirdorder observables for molecular solutes (1997− 2013) In the last years the activity has been focused on the following topics: • interpretation of internal and external effects on the properties of molecules and other material systems • intermolecular interactions, chemical reactivity, reaction mechanisms © 2015 Jacopo Tomasi
• solvent effects on the structural, dynamical and chemical properties of molecular systems • electric and magnetic response functions of molecules and larger bodies • nonlinear optical properties of complex systems including a metal, chromophores and a dielectric phase • spectroscopic properties of various nature, mostly in solution • interpretation and calculation of the physicochemical properties of solutions and of restricted liquid systems (interphases, dispersed systems, liquid surfaces etc.) • energy transfer based phenomena
