Extend has built-in serial port support in its user-accessible programming language t h a t provides a way to interface with d a t a acquisition h a r d ware. Extend also supports the use of external function code (i.e., Hypercard XFCNs), so it is easy to add XFCNs for s t a n d a r d B A S I C - l i k e Peek and Poke functions. These are being added to the Voigt fx libraries. Extend will very likely be ported to the Windows environment by early to m i d - 1 9 9 4 , a n d t h e P o w e r P C based RISC processor systems will become available at about the same t i m e . Both of t h e s e d e v e l o p m e n t s bode well for u s e r s of t h e s i m u l a tions described, particularly with regard to the polychromatic version of the software, and it a p p e a r s to be only a matter of time before the Macintosh operating system is available on high-speed workstations.
