SOFTWARE/DATABASE UPDATE Software I Database Update provides readers with information about new chemistry-related computer programs. Vendors may submit relevant press releases to Software I Database Update, Chemical & Engineering News, 1155—16th St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036.

One Of TheFew Foam Problems J We Can't Solve. But we have antifoam agents for just about everything else. Including products for both aqueous and non-aqueous systems. High and low pH. High temperatures. And food-related uses. Our antifoam agents are concentrated, too. A little goes a long way, lasts a long time. For samples or to talk to our antifoam experts...

• Molecule Spreadsheet (Molecular Design Ltd., $15,000 to $50,000, Circle 201), an add-on to the MACCS-II chemical information management system, formats lists of compounds and specific data on those compounds in the rows and columns of a spreadsheet. The program arranges chemical.structures and data into a logical format, making it easier for researchers to correlate, view, and report information on test compounds. It currently runs on the VAX/VMS operating system. • ChemPlan: SAP (TranTech Consultants, $15,000 for single package plus $5000 annual support fee, Circle 202) is a database on superabsorbent polymers with expert system capabilities for interactive decision-making. Its competitive economics data make it possible to do cost assessments on manufacturing of superabsorbent polymers and products from competing materials and technologies. The IBM PC-based program also includes s u p p l y - d e m a n d data, applications information, and performance test data. • Thor 4.1 (Daylight Chemical Information Systems Inc., $5000 single-user license, Circle 203), a structure-oriented chemical database system, adds binary data as one of many data types supported. Using a client-server networking mechanism, the program provides distributed database access across different computer architectures. It runs on UNIX and VMS operating systems. • Thermodynamic and Transport Properties of Molten Salts (National Institute of Standards & Technology, $190, Circle 204) is a properties database of 320 inor-

ganic salts in the molten state, including information on density, surface tension, electrical conductance, and viscosity. The program, which runs on IBM PCs and compatibles, is designed to aid research on high-temperature and high-pressure materials and properties. • Life Science Network (Biosis, Circle 205) is an on-line service that gives individual researchers access to approximately 80 bibliographic and full-text databases in the life sciences and related disciplines, including Biosis Previews and Biosis Connection. It can be accessed on BT Tymnet, Sprintnet, or CompuServe. • Laplace Transform Tools (Dynacomp, $240, Circle 206), for IBMs and compatibles, implements a general technique for the numerical inversion of Laplace transforms. Many time-dependent models in reaction chemistry, biology, heat transfer, and diffusion can be described in terms of such transforms, but the inversions are often difficult or impossible to obtain algebraically. • Available Chemicals Directory (Molecular Design Ltd., $12,000 to $17,000 or $3500 to $5000 as an upgrade to the Fine Chemicals Directory, Circle 207) is a chemical database that simplifies the task of finding suppliers of chemicals, whether in research-scale or bulk quantities. The database contains detailed information on available chemicals from over 700 international suppliers.

Literature • Environmental Software Directory (Donley Technology, $69, Circle 208) provides detailed information on government and commercial databases, on-line systems, and software packages for environmental applications. For information on these items or numbered ads, see Reader Service Card
