DIRECTORY SECTION

John H. Nair Dr. John H. Nair, 78, consultant, director of Avi Publishing Co., and vice presi­ dent of L&N Corp., died July 26 in Syracuse, N.Y. Dr. Nair had long been active in ACS affairs and had served in many important posts for the Society. He joined ACS in 1920 and was chairman of the Syracuse Section (1926-27) and of the New York Section (1950-51). He was chairman of the Di­ vision of Agricultural and Food Chem­ istry in 1935; served as director-at-large (1964-67) and councilor (1929-35 and 1946—67), as well as on various ACS na­ tional committees. He was chairman of the ACS 75th Anniversary Committee, 1950-51. In 1934 Dr. Nair introduced the idea of establishing student affiliate chapters in ACS as a source of future strength for the Society. He was chair­ m a n of the ACS Planning Committee for the Building Fund Campaign (1957-60). Dr. Nair was one of those named by the ACS Board to create the group life insurance plan for ACS members. He had also been named to chair the com­ mittee appointed to investigate feasi­ bility of a plan of malpractice insurance for ACS members. Dr. Nair was educated at Beloit Col­ lege, took a B.S. there in 1915, and re­ ceived an honorary D.Sc. from Beloit in 1958. In 1966 he received the Gold Medal of the American Institute of Chemists. He had been AIC president in 1956. He was a founder of the Insti­ tute of Food Technologists and served as IFT president in 1966. Dr. Nair's career in industry began with Merrell-Soule Co., Syracuse, as a research chemist. The company was acquired by Borden Co. in 1928 and he became assistant director of the Syra­ cuse research labs of Borden. He joined Thomas J. Lipton, Inc., in 1942 and helped that company expand into dried soup mixes and dehydrated tea extracts. He also acted as food con­ sultant in the U.S. for Unilever, Ltd. He retired from Lipton in 1957 and since that time continued active in many ca­ pacities, one of which was a visiting professorship at North Carolina State University.
