Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. 1992,31,639-640
Dedication We take great pleasure in writing the introductory remarks for the collection of papers in this issue of Industrial & Engineering Chemistv Research, dedicated to Stuart W. Churchill on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Most of the papers in this collection are based on presentations made at the Annual Meeting of The American Institute of Chemical Engineers held in Chicago in November 1990where more than 25 papers were given at the five sessions on Rate Processes, organized to honor Stuart. We are grateful to authors, reviewers, and the Editor of I&EC Research for their contributions. In a career spanning almost five decades, Stuart has had a dominant influence on chemical engineering, especially as regards rate pmcesses. First at the University of Michigan and now at the University of Pennsylvania, he has taught, mentored, and collaborated with scores of researchers-d the while showing how the prepared mind tackles hard problems. The 44 Ph.D. students who studied with ‘Churchill” have especially benefited from his insights and encouragement. The figure on the following page showing a family tree of students, compiled by Warren Seider of the University of Pennsylvania, illustrates a cross section of the discipline of chemical engineering. Characteristically,Stuart shows no sign of slowing his pace, and several of the papers in this collection list him as author or co-author. We wish him continued success. John C.
