Office of Pesticide Programs, Hazard Evaluation Division, TS-769C, Exposure Assessment Branch, Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC 20460 An organizational overview of the risk assessment process in the EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) is presented. A review of many field studies of agricultural worker exposure during pesticide application indicates that typically the principal route of exposure is through the skin. Procedures in OPP for estimating dermal exposure from "surro gate" studies are described. A predictive correla tion derived for estimating exposure during airblast application to orchards is presented, as are the results of new studies designed to monitor exposure during pesticide application to row crops using ground boom equipment. Methods for estimating dermal absorption and areas where more research is needed are discussed.
