Desolvating nebulizer for ICPMS The Mistral nebulization system for ICP-AES and ICPMS is designed to reduce interferences caused by the formation of oxides in the plasma torch. Inserted between the nebulizer and the ICP torch, the Mistral introduces the aerosolized sample into an explosive radiative heating system to remove most of the carrier solvent before the sample is introduced into the torch. If not removed, carrier solvent can cause oxides and other molecular species to form in the torch, creating isobaric interferences for some elements. The explosive radiative heating system is an elliptical oven with a spray chamber and an IR heat source placed at the foci. The liquid sample is pneumatically sprayed into the oven where the IR source rapidly heats the droplets to evaporate the solvent while the oven walls remain relatively cool. Excess sample vapor condenses on the oven walls and washes down continuously. The aerosol then passes through a water-cooled condenser operating at ~ 40 °C and through a Peltier cooling condenser that can be set to temperatures between -5 °C and 2 °C to remove most of the carrier solvent. Analytical sensitivity is typically 8- to 10-fold better than that obtainable with pneumatic nebulizers alone. Fisons • 405

Quartz c r y s t a l analyzer The Model QCA 917 quartz crystal analyzer is designed to integrate with a potentiostat and electrochemistry software for applications such as analyses of electrochemical deposition, polymer coatings on electrodes, corrosion, adsorption, and electrochemical reaction mechanisms at liquidsolid interfaces. The QCA 917 working electrodes consist of either Pt or Au sputtered 3000 À thick onto a Ti layer on 9-MHz AT-cut quartz crystal resonators. The analyzer measures the frequency and resonant resistance of the quartz substrate when mass changes occur at the electrode surface. It is sensitive enough to detect mass changes in a monolayer on the electrode surface, and elasticity and viscosity changes in a solution can be quantitated. The analyzer has two analog outputs: change in frequency (proportional to the electrode mass) and admittance. Both outputs have a resolution of 1 part in 4096. Update rates for both are set by the main unit gate time, which is variable from 0.1 to 10 s.
