b In a sensitive color test for aromatic hydrocarbons and phenols, the aromatic compound reacts with benzal or piperonal chloride in trifluoroacetic acid to form a brilliantly colored diarylmethane dye. The colors and long wave length maxima for approximately 50 derivatives are presented. For mono-substituted benzene derivatives, the long wave length maximum of the piperonal chloride products shifted to longer wave length in the order H
