Diamond Alkali's T. R. Evans Research Center Surface area of a catalyst is measured on this Branauer, Emmett, & Teller (Β. Ε. Τ.) unit. The unit can determine catalyst areas varying between 10 sq. meters/g. and 1000 sq. meters/g. *—^ 35 miles from Cleveland on a 30-acre clearing in an 800acre wooded site. T h e T. R. Evans Research Center in Con­ cord township, Ohio, commands an impressive view overlook­ ing t h e suburban section of Lake County with Lake Erie in the distance. Dedicated on October 6, 1961, the Center is t h e focal point of Diamond's research activities, and it serves t h e company on a nationwide basis. T h e research activities of the l a b are concentrated in five main areas—agricultural chemicals with special emphasis on pesticides a n d their anal­ ysis, plastics such as vinyl chloride, high temperature-resist­ ant polymers, organics, especially chlorinated organics, and nuclear fuels. The analytical section makes u p about 18% of the total technical personnel working directly on projects and funda­ mental research. T h e section develops methods of analysis and, depending on t h e complexity and instrument require­ ments, m a y continue to support the project within its own area. Otherwise the procedure and equipment are trans­ ferred to the research or pilot plant areas where chemists or engineers become responsible for the analytical data needed. The analytical section supports other basic research proj­ ects b y such techniques as electron microscopy; x-ray fluo­ rescence and diffraction; emission, infrared, and mass spec­ trometry ; chromatography ; and micro- a n d macro-wet chem­ ical procedures. There is a close liaison between the analytical group and workers on specific projects. When necessary, personnel are temporarily transferred to maintain the progress of a project via the technique of t h e critical path. The Center consists of three main buildings—the researchadministration building, t h e process development lab, a n d a high pressure lab. T h e research-administration building con­ tains 61 lab modules which have movable metal partitions, thus making it easy to reapportion work space. T h e labs are situated back to back, separated b y a common service corridor which contains all the needed services. The 35,000 sq. ft. process lab houses eight 12' X 24' lab modules, a distillation lab, a n d two pilot labs. T h e high pressure lab has six 6 X 9 pressure labs of reinforced concrete. Gas chromatograph-coulometric titrator, sensitive only to C l ~ , is used to analyze chloride pesticide residues in agricultural products. The instrument determines chloride ions in pesticide residues in parts-per-billion. Residue analysis helps determine how pesticides are absorbed in agricultural products, thereby aiding in extending the range of products which can safely be sprayed with pesticides. The amount of pesticide residue which can be tolerated is strictly limited by FDA regulations

Experimental polymers are evaluated on this lab size 1 " screw extruder. The extruder has been modified to accept temperature and pressure probes along the barrel and die. It is used to determine optimum conditions for extruding a polymer as well as most satisfactory polymer compositions. The extruder can handle polymer samples as small as one pound

Chromized stee! specimens are tested for hardness on this Tukon hardness tester. The chromized steel is intended for possible use in automobile mufflers. Hardness tests are also run on various metallic and ceramic-type coating particles which are fabricated into elements for fuel reactors. These particles must be hard in order to withstand pressures resulting from fabrication. The instrument can be adapted for direct measurement of thickness of metal coatings on steels in the range 0.1 to 0.5 mil

The degree of crystallinity of polymers such as PVC and PVA is determined by x-ray diffraction. Qualitative and Quantitative Filters — Most E-D grades are qualitative filters. Three, however, are quanti­ tative grades: #60 (fast), #70 (Medi­ um) and #80 (slow). Ash content of each E-D quantitative filter is a full 25% less than that called for in ASTM and government regulations.
