SOC.1989, 11 I, 1193-1203 aldehydic C-H bond since very little v2(C,0) C H 3 C 0 is formed from v2(C,0) CH,CDO decomposition but probably that the aliphatic C-H bonds and/or the C-CH, bond are weaker than the aliphatic C-D bonds and/or the C-CD, bond. This, coupled with the shift in the 350 K peak temperature to 357 K for H D and 367 K for D, from CH,CDO decomposition (Figure 2), indicates a small, but detectable, isotope effect in the decomposition of v2(C,0) acetaldehyde. 4.2.2. Other Species. As mentioned above, very small amounts of v2(C,0) C H 3 C 0 are likely in the decomposition of v2(C,0) CH,CHO. This species is characterized by coincident desorption of H, and C 0 2 a t 450 K in TPD, CH,', and CH3COt +SSIMS signals and an intense v ( C 0 ) loss at 1420 cm-1.5,6 The v(C0) mode of q2(C,0) acetyl, produced from q2(C,0) C H 3 C H 0 decomposition in this study, is not clearly resolved by H R E E L S because its coverage is low. The CD3' and CD3CO+ions of Figure 7 attenuate coincident with the 448 K D2 T P D state, indicating that some v2(C,0) C D 3 C 0 does result from C D 3 C D 0 decomposition. There is no evidence that v2(C,0) CH,CHO decomposition results in CCH, formation. The HREELS of C C H 3 should give a loss a t 1100 cm-' from the v(CC) mode24but is not observed in Figure 13e from v2(C,0) C H , C H O decomposition. CCH, formation from C H 3 C H 0 decomposition was observed by McCabe et al. on Pt(S)[6(lll)X(100)].3 The decomposition of C,H fragments is responsible for most of the H2 desorption above 400 K. These fragments result from decomposition of v2(C,0) CH,CHO. However, since the amount of H, above 400 K is much less than that below 400 K, C,H is a minority species in CH,CHO decomposition. An HREELS loss a t about 850 cm-' in Figures 10d and 13e is due to the 6(CH) mode of C,H, and losses in the 1400-1200-cm-' region may be attributed in part to the v(CC) mode.
