Diphenylamine (N-Phenylbenzeneamine) Part 4, Monographs for Reagent Chemicals: General Descriptions, Specifications, and Tests eISBN: 9780841230460 Tom Tyner Chair, ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents James Francis Secretary, ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents

ABSTRACT This monograph for Diphenylamine provides, in addition to common physical constants, a general description including typical appearance, applications, aqueous solubility, and pKa. The monograph also details the following specifications and corresponding tests for verifying that a substance meets ACS Reagent Grade specifications including: Melting Point, Sensitivity to Nitrate, Solubility in Alcohol, Residue after Ignition, and Nitrate.

TESTS Melting Point [Part 2: Measurement of Physical Properties; Melting Point].

Sensitivity to Nitrate To 8 mL of the solution retained from the test for nitrate, add 0.01 mg of nitrate ion (NO3) and allow to stand at 60 °C for 5 min. A blue color should be produced.

Solubility in Alcohol Dissolve 1.0 g in 50 mL of alcohol. The solution should be clear and colorless.

Residue after Ignition [Part 2: Gravimetric Methods; Residue after Ignition]. Ignite 4.0 g. Moisten the char with 2 mL of sulfuric acid.

Nitrate To 20 mL of water, add 60 mL of nitrate-free sulfuric acid, adjust the temperature to about 60 °C, and add 0.5 mL of hydrochloric acid and 0.0100 g of the sample. No blue color should be produced in 5 min. Retain the solution for the test for sensitivity to nitrate.
