Along with everyday necessities, it gives you access to many less familiar compounds that could lead you in significant new directions. Here for your consideration are some of the newer additions: 3-Hydroxy-2-naphthoic Acid (EASTMAN 392) A method for the spectrofluorometric detection of trace amounts (2 ppb and 0.2 ppb, resp.) of aluminum and beryllium is based on the measurement at 460 ταμ of their blue fluorescent complexes with this compound. Anal. Chem., 37:131 (1965).
N-Salicylideneanthranilic Acid (EASTMAN 10303) o-(N-salicylideneamino) benzoic acid An orange-colored reagent which forms a violet complex with vanadium. Can detect to 10 /xg/ml even in the presence of many diverse ions—ferric ions excepted. Israel J. Chem., 4:189 (1966).
Cyclohexanebutyric Acid (EASTMAN 5981) 2-Ethylhexanoic Acid Basic Aluminum Salt (EASTMAN 10248) 2-Ethylhexanoic Acid Silver Salt (EASTMAN 10250) NBS Monograph #54 in a landmark way examines oil-soluble metal lic compounds. It asserts that the salts of 2-ethylhexanoic and cyclo hexanebutyric acids, though less soluble than naphthenates, are more definite compounds. Not new to our list are 2-Ethylhexanoic Acid it self (EASTMAN P4442), 6-Methyl-2,4-heptanedione (EASTMAN 10027), and 2-Ethylhexylamine (EASTMAN P6759), all useful in solubilizing such salts.
l,6-Diphenyl-l,3,5-hexatriene (EASTMAN 10151) CoHsCH : CHCH : CHCH : CHCoHs One of the great scintillators of a scintillating age. Also luminesces and fluoresces. Japan J. Appl. Phys., 4:881 (1965).
2-Chloro-5-cyano-3,6-dihydroxy-p-benzoquinone Disodium Salt (EASTMAN 10185)
Reagent for the spectrophotometry determination of micro amounts of calcium ( I I )2. Forms complexes with the Ca +2 ; can be used in the presence of Ba+ . Anal. Chem., 55:1018 (1966). 2-Amino-6-bromobenzothiazole (EASTMAN 10264) Intermediate for bromobenzothiazole dyes, including a Cd reagent of note, as detailed in Chem. Abstr., 61:1847f (1964). Long known for application to legal papers to reveal tampering with ink eradicator. Don't ask us. Consult J. Org. Chem., 8:551 (1943). 2,4-Dinitrophenyl Acetate (EASTMAN 10262) A convenient and accurate method for the direct titration of the enzyme, α-chymotrypsin, used 2,4-dinitrophenyl acetate as titrant. J.A.C.S., 88:5890 (1966). We have also recently made available p-Nitrophenyl Acetate (EASTMAN 9020) as a titrant for œ-chymotrypsin and l-fra/ji-Cmnamoylimidazole (EASTMAN 10231) as titrant for subtilisin.
l,5-Diphenyl-l,3,5-pentanetrione (EASTMAN 10174) Interesting triketone which behaves as a bidentate ligand for the formation of organometallic compounds with UO2, Cu, Ni, Co, Zh, Cd. J. Phys. Chem., 64:1927 (1960). 3,3'-Dithiobis(6-nitrobenzoic Acid) (EASTMAN 10212) Ellman's reagent The crucial clothespin role of sulfhydryl groups in the shaping of enzymes has created a big demand for "Ellman's reagent" for measuring —SH concentrations. It joins the recently added N-Ethylmaleimide (EASTMAN 9951), also a sulfhydryl reagent. Biochem., 5:1702 (1966); J. Biol. Chem., 242:3673 (1967). 5-Chloro-2-nitrobenzoic Acid (EASTMAN 10210) If you have reason to synthesize Ellman's reagent yourself, you might use this as an intermediate. We do. 2,6-Dimethyl-3,5-heptanedione (EASTMAN 10218) diisobutyrylmethane 4,6-Nonanedione (EASTMAN 10219) dibutyrylmethane Two additions to our long list of /3-diketones; the former forms métal chelates with Ba, Cu, Ni, Mg, Co, Mn, Hg, Zn. The latter is a ligand for Cu, Ba, Na, Ni, Zn. / . Chem. Soc, 2153, 4628 (1962).
