COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY, SCHOOL OF LIBRARY SERVICE

HARVARD SUMMER SCHOOL AUGUST 10-AUGUST 21, 1964

During the 1964 Summer Session. Columbia University's School of Library Service is offering again a course on Scientific and technical abstracting and indexing (LS S6321G). first offered in 1957. The course is being taught by T. E . R . Singer. formerly Chemistry Librarian at the Xew York Public Library and now a private consultant in the field of technical information. I t is scheduled t o meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays. and Thursdays during the six weeks of the Summer Session (July 6-August 14).

A Special Program on Language Data Processing will be conducted by the Division of Engineering and Applied Physics. under the joint direction of Dr. Anthony G. Oettinger. Professor of Applied Mathematics and of Linguistics. and Dr. Gerard Salton. Assistant Professor of Applied Mathematics. assisted by Drs. Vincent E. Giuliano, Sheila A. Greibach, Warren J. Plath. Murray E. Sherry. and Mr. Susumu Kuno. The purpose of this program is to give an introduction to useful newly acquired knowledge about both natural languages. such as English. and formal languages of the type used in programming systems. Theoretical results based on mathematical linguistics. logic. algebra, statistics, recursive function theory, and the theory of automata will be applied to significant problems of language analysis with emphasis on applications such as fact and document retrieval and the design of languages for specialized computer processes ranging from symbol manipulation to the control of visual displays. Laboratory sessions will serve to acquaint participants with existing syntactic analysis and retrieval systems and provide opportunity for experimentation with dictionaries, grammars, and documentation systems. I t is expected that those attending will have a degree in either mathematics, linguistics. or the computer sciences. or equivalent experience. The fee is $400 (S300 for tuition. plus $100 for laboratory fees).

FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY A new program in information science leading toward a master of science degree is being offered at Florida State University to students who have majored in a science as undergraduates. Gnder the direction of Dr. Gerald Jahoda, professor in the Library School, the program prepares students for expanding career opportunities with technical information centers in industry and government. Courses in abstracting and indexing, literature searching, instrumentation of information services. and information center administration as well as basic courses in librarianship will be offered to the information science major.
