1960 Review of Fundamental Developments in Analysis T h e editors are pleased and proud to present AC’s 12th in the series of analytical reviews. I n accordance with the pattern established several years ago of alternating fundamental and application reviews, this year we present the review of fundamental developments in analysis. The pattern of reviews of 1958 is being followed closely in 1960. This year we have 30 fundamental reviews, compared to 31 in 1958. K‘ot on the list this year are microbiological assays and x-ray diffraction. Included is one on gas chromatography by Stephen Dal Nogare. The remaining 29 deal with the same subjects as the 1958 reviews. T w o special reviews are also included this year: automatic and recording balances by Saul Gordon and Clement Campbell and thermometric titration by Seymour T. Zenchelsky. I n 1958 we had 48 authors; this year including authors of the two special reviews there are 45. Of the 1958 authors 37 are with us this year.

ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY

With the publication of the 292 pages making up the 1960 reviews, the 12 annual reviews to date have totaled 2312 pages of technical material. It is of interest t o note t h a t the average number of pages in the fundamental series has crept from about 120 pages (1950-52) to a little more than 300 (1958-1960). There are a host of other interesting statistics that may be gleaned from the review such as the increasing number of literature citations and the large number of foreign sources utilized. The real value of reviews, however, does not lie in statistics. Comprehensive reviews, carefully prepared by authorities in their respective fields, help put developments in better perspective. This is particularly valuable in areas of rapid developments. They are not a substitute for reading the original literature but are a valuable supplement. We feel that this year’s reviews will rate high by whatever criteria they are judged.
