19th International Conference on Petroleum Phase Behavior and Fouling e are pleased to introduce this special section of Energy & Fuels for the 19th International Conference on Petroleum Phase Behavior and Fouling (PetroPhase 2018). PetroPhase has been the premiere international meeting since 1999 to discuss the latest discoveries and advancements for understanding petroleum and reservoir fluids during oil extraction, transportation, and refining. In this volume, you will find 18 technical contributions that were presented as a part of the PetroPhase 2018 meeting that was held from July 8 to 12, 2018 in Park City, Utah. The University of Utah’s Department of Chemical Engineering was honored to host this meeting and to be a part of the long and international history of PetroPhase. Each year the meeting is run by a team of volunteers, and it has been hosted in 10 different countries during its 19 consecutive years. PetroPhase moves around so much that it has never been hosted in the same city twice. The strong and committed community of PetroPhase attendees is one of the reasons why the conference has been sustained for such a long period. We are grateful to the conference attendees and to the previous hosts for constructing a strong culture of research communication and sharing. The PetroPhase 2018 meeting was attended by over 170 scientists and engineers from 92 different industrial and academic institutions, 18 countries, and 5 continents. A total of 49 research presentations (including 5 keynotes) and over 120 posters were discussed at the meeting. The single-stage format and the small venue of PetroPhase are ideal conditions to learn about the latest studies and to network with fellow researchers. The papers included in this special section cover a wide range of topics: asphaltene properties and deposition, enhanced oil recovery, wax/paraffin deposition, and emulsion stability and interfacial properties of water−hydrocarbon systems. Additional details on the technical agenda can be access at https:// petrophase2018.che.utah.edu/. This meeting was the return of PetroPhase to the United States since last being hosted in the U.S.A. in 2014. Further, the 2018 meeting marks the highest PetroPhase ever, literally. The conference venue, The Chateaux at Deer Valley Resort, sat at approximately 8000 feet (2500 m) elevation, beating out (by a substantial margin) the previous record holder: the 2004 meeting hosted in Banff, Alberta, Canada. Nowhere was the beauty of the Wasatch Mountains more on display than during the Gala dinner hosted at the Red Pine Lodge, nestled in the middle of the Park City Mountain Resort and accessed by attendees using a gondola lift. The evening was filled with exquisite food and drink, along with entertainment by local cowboys, The Hired Guns: Craig “Creek” Johnson and Lannie “The Marshall” Scopes. In addition to lasso lessons for attendees, the pair welcomed the sunset with country western music. This meeting would not have been successful were it not for the generous sponsorship and hard work of the organizing and technical committees. In addition to the conference co-chairs, the organizing committee also included Lamia Goual

(University of Wyoming) and Jeramie Adams (Western Research Institute). The technical committee was co-chaired by Jules J. Magda (University of Utah) and Rama Venkatesan (Chevron). The full list of the technical committee includes Simon Andersen, Jean Francois Argillier, Walter Chapman, Scott Fogler, Pierre Giusti, Murray Gray, Ryan Hartman, David Jennings, Peter Kilpatrick, Ray Levy, Carlos LiraGaleana, John McLennan, Daniel Merino Garcia, Ryan Rodgers, John Shaw, Johan Sjøblom, Ryuzo Tanaka, Frans van den Berg, Nicolas von Solms, Jianxing Wang, Irv Wiehe, Harvey Yarranton, Andrew Yen, Hongbo Zeng, and Hongang Zhou. Sponsorship was graciously provided by Chevron, The University of Utah’s Department of Chemical Engineering, Ennova, ExxonMobil, NalcoChampion, Suez, and the SI Group. We are also proud to announce the winners of the “Outstanding Student Poster Contribution” awards: Jairo Duran (University of Calgary, Canada), Juan-Sebastian Ramirez-Pradilla (Universidad Industrial de Santander, Colombia), Jonathan Putnam (National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, U.S.A.), and Yuan Yang (The University of Utah, U.S.A.). The meeting would not have been successful without the dedicated assistance from The University of Utah conferences and event management team: Carrie Grant, Brandon Grizzell, Christopher Pehler, and Meghan Webb. We are in debt to the staff of the Department of Chemical Engineering for their assistance and to Weiyi Kong, Rizwanur Rahman, Yichen Wang, and Yuan Yang for onsite management of the audio/video, questions and answers, and speaker photographs. Hosting the PetroPhase 2018 meeting was a privilege. We were delighted to help support the meeting’s continued success as the premiere meeting for flow assurance and petroleum property research. We hope you enjoy the papers in this special section and extend an invitation to attend future meetings.
