2019We Are 30!

he first issue of Chemistry of Materials appeared on January 1, 1989 (Figure 1), and it was apparent to the world that it was a groundbreaking journal, bringing together materials and chemistry, within the ACS portfolio of journals. We are very excited to celebrate our 30th anniversary with the materials chemistry community in a variety of ways. Both the journal and the field of materials chemistry have come a long way in 30 years, and we cannot possibly imagine where the field will go in another 30 years, but we can sure have fun trying. Some of the items we have planned for this year include:

(i) A machine learning-generated Chemistry of Materials article. What will a machine learning-based algorithm assemble and write based upon 30 years of published articles? We are very much looking forward to the final product, which we will “publish” in the journal. (ii) 30th anniversary research symposium. We will be holding our symposium on April 1, 2019, at the Orlando ACS meeting with leading scientists who represent some of the remarkable new directions materials chemistry is taking. Speakers include Omar Farha (metal organic frameworks), Dahui Zhao (organic electronics), Mercouri Kanatzidis (inorganic materials), Guihua Yu (nanomaterials for energy), Brandi Cossairt (inorganic nanomaterials), and Kirk Schanze (light-emitting organic materials). Please join us for an exciting morning of chemistry and materials. (iii) Two virtual issues, entitled “30 for 30”. These two issues are in essence time capsules, each comprising 30 Chemistry of Materials papers published in the previous year in what are two of the most exciting areas of materials chemistry in 2019. How will these areas evolve in another 30 years?

Figure 2. 30th anniversary T-shirts and alumimum water bottles we will share with authors, readers and reviewers at selected events around the world in 2019 to help us celebrate 30 years.

(iv) Interviews with authors from the inaugural 1989 volume of the journal who are, today, leaders in materials chemistry research. We look forward to hearing the perspectives they will they bring to the past, and to the future of materials chemistry.

Find us at the 30th anniversary symposium at the Orlando ACS meeting, and at selected events around the world for a tshirt or aluminum water bottle (Figure 2) to help us celebrate in style! Science always looks sharp in black! Please follow us on Twitter (@ChemMater) and WeChat (Chemistry of Materials) to keep appraised of the latest events. We look forward to a very exciting year, and hope to share this excitement with the materials chemistry community.
