Part 4, Monographs for Reagent Chemicals: General Descriptions, Specifications, and Tests eISBN: 9780841230460 Tom Tyner Chair, ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents James Francis Secretary, ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents
ABSTRACT This monograph for 2,9-Dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline provides, in addition to common physical constants, a general description including typical appearance, applications, and change in state (approximate). The monograph also details the following specifications and corresponding tests for verifying that a substance meets ACS Reagent Grade specifications including: Clarity of Solution, Sensitivity to Copper, and Loss on Drying.
C14H12N2
Formula Wt 208.26
CAS No. 484-11-7
Note: This reagent is available with water of hydration between anhydrous and hemihydrate. It loses water easily, and either form is acceptable.

Maximum Allowable Loss on drying . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6.0%
TESTS Clarity of Solution Dissolve 0.30 g in 10 mL of water by adding hydrochloric acid dropwise until solution is complete. The solution should be clear with not more than a faint yellow color. Save the solution for the sensitivity to copper test.
Downloaded by NEW YORK UNIV on May 18, 2017 | http://pubs.acs.org Publication Date (Web): February 28, 2017 | doi: 10.1021/acsreagents.4123
Sensitivity to Copper Dilute the sample reserved from the clarity of solution test to 100 mL with water. In a 25 mL flask, add a standard containing 0.005 mg of copper, 1 mL of hydroxylamine hydrochloride reagent solution, and 2 mL of 10% sodium acetate reagent solution. Add 0.1 mL of the prepared sample solution. A yellow-orange color should develop with an absorption maximum at 454 nm.
Loss on Drying Accurately weigh 1.0 g in a preconditioned weighing bottle, and dry at 100 °C for 1 h. Cool, and weigh.
