A. C. S. MONOGRAPHS Recognizing t h a t progress in pure and applied chemistry is absolutely d e p e n d e n t on a complete, reliable and readable record of what has been accomplished i n the past, the Ameri can Chemical Society in 1919 inaugurated a series of scientific and technologic monographs on chemical subjects. By arrangement with the Inter-Allied Conference of Pure and Ap plied Chemistry which met in London and Brussels in J u l y of that year, this particular u n d e r t a k i n g was assumed by the American Chemical Society as a special contribution to the a d v a n c e m e n t of chemistry throughout the world. Prior to this undertaking, there had been lacking in the English, language a profusion of a u t h o r i t a t i v e monographs on detailed subjects in the field of chemistry, such as h a d long existed in G e r m a n y , and to a lesser extent in other European countries. In a great measure this was due to the reluctance of publishers to assume the responsibility for highly technical monographs on detailed scientific subjects, and a consequent disinclination on the p a r t of busy professional men to devote time to the writing of books for which they knew they would experience difficulty in finding a publisher. T h e series of monographs, scientific and technologic, sponsored by t h e American Chemi cal Society and published by the Book D e p a r t m e n t of T h e Chemical Catalog C o m p a n y , Inc., h a s solved this problem and has insured the permanent existence of a real chemical literature in the English language. As m a y be seen from the list below, 26 monographs on a great v a r i e t y of subjects h a v e already been published, while even a larger number are actively in preparation. T h e Editorial Boards are constantly considering t h e publication of further contributions to this series, and are open at all times to consider suitable manuscripts.
