Here, in the heart of Mid-America, the nation's pioneer soybean processor converts bumper grain crops from the surrounding farmland into an everwidening array of products for the farm, home, and industry, and ships more than 100 carloads daily. New Opportunity I n Growth So aggressive research and enterprise ha\ r e accomplished a broad diversification in products derived from corn and
soybeans. Net sales have multiplied four times in the last 15 years, a p proaching $200 million annually. Hundreds of new products await development from these plentiful, natural recurring crops, yet continuing growth calls for new research in other fields as well. Just as the Staley Company pioneered in soybean processing 35 years ago, so now it is entering a new era of development in non-grain derived products. Your Place I n Research Six distinct research groups offer outstanding opportunity for the chemist and the engineer at Staley's: 1) Bio-chemistry—fermentation chemicals, nutrition research, natural products development 2) Carbohydrates—fundamental research, starch derivatives, enzymatic, processes, adhesives 3) Polymers—synthetic, natural, and combinations of the two
4) Vegetable oils and proteins—fatty acids, alcohols, amino acids; chemical derivatives such as lecithin, sterols, epoxidized oils; refining methods 5) Exploratory chemistry—freedom of action in research designed to create new knowledge 6) Physics, technical, analytical, and evaluation laboratories—collaborating with all groups.
Your Place In Technical Service Technical service groups of the R e search Division include sections on papers, textiles, adhesives, food technology, and other industrial applications. These groups are responsible for new product development, present product application and customer service.
Your Place In Development Process design and development are centered in a modern, three-story building with over 37,000 square feet of floor space. The division is organized to permit participation in m a n y varied projects, not limited to single categories. Participating in the increasingly varied activities of the Staley Company, the development engineer gains a breadth and depth of experience which enhance his professional growth. H e is responsible for engineering new processes from t h e research laboratory to the production stage, including smallscale manufacture of new products during the m a r k e t development phase.
Your Place In Engineering Chemical engineers receive challenging individual assignments in trouble shooting, process improvement, development, and integration of new processes with exacting manufacturing operations. Rotation and working together on diversified problems add experience toward numerous opportunities in production and administrative positions.
