A Great Ride

early 16 years ago, I got an unexpected call from Gordon Amidon asking if I might be interested in becoming the Associate Editor for a new ACS journal, Molecular Pharmaceutics. Gordon told me that he wanted a diverse team that included medicinal chemists as part of a new journal, devoted to drug delivery. Gordon assured me that his past experience as an editor for Pharmaceutical Research and the amazing capabilities of ACS Publications would give the journal a great chance for success. Gordon went on to include experience in biological and macromolecular drug design by adding his colleague at the University of Michigan, Kyung-Dall Lee. From the very start, Gordon insisted on the highest standards for the review and publication of manuscripts. His vision was to provide a home for manuscripts in drug delivery and development with the broadest possible appeal across established and emerging areas of pharmaceutical science. To assist with his goal, Gordon persuaded a number of outstanding pharmaceutical scientists to join the Editorial Advisory Board. At first, some were not entirely convinced of the need for the journal, but after the first year, all doubts were put to rest as Molecular Pharmaceutics quickly gained acceptance with in the scientific community. Over the last 15 years, Gordon recruited additional outstanding Associate Editors, Eric Munson (University of Kentucky), Christine Allen (University of Toronto), Raj Suryanarayanan (University of Minnesota), and Demin Zhou (Peking University). The dedicated and hard work of each has deepened and extended the reach of the journal in many ways. Throughout his tenure as Editor-in-Chief, Gordon pushed for new ways of highlighting exciting and ground breaking research, establishing the first ACS special issue series. This innovation has been very popular and has given many guest editors the chance to promote outstanding research in cutting edge areas of pharmaceutical research of their expertise. Gordon also realized the need for the journal to participate in social media several years ago, putting the journal on twitter, which is now quite common for publications. With Gordon’s expert hand, infectious good humor, and grace, the journal has grown and established itself as one of the premier journals in pharmaceutical sciences. Last, but not least, Gordon was wise enough to tap Kimberly Barrett as the Coordinating Editor. As I know Gordon would agree, Kim’s outstanding professionalism, dedicated effort, and diplomatic tactfulness have been a tremendous contributing factor to the journal’s success. As the torch is passed to the next Editor-in-Chief, Lynne Taylor, Gordon can be proud that he has laid a wonderful foundation for publication excellence and innovation by the journal. It has been a very unexpected and wild ride! We look forward to seeing what heights and new dimensions Lynne and her new team take Molecular Pharmaceutics!
