HERCULES
A Solid Background in Solid Propellants
Hercules' solid background in solid propellants for 25 years is founded on an extensive and continuing program of research and development in this highly specialized area. In addition to its Corporate Research Center near Wilmington, Delaware, the company conducts propel lant R/D at: Al legany Bal I istics Laboratory, Cumberland, Md.; Bacchus Works, Bacchus, Utah; and Kenvil Works, Kenvil, N.J. Research in combustion is a major phase of Hercules activities. In this photograph, a Hercules scientist is operating an arc-imaging furnace—an advanced and
unique tool used in solid propellant studies. In this test, a small sample is exposed to the flux produced by double focusing of a carbon arc which simulates the ultra high-temperature environment of a rocket motor. The high-pressure gas chamber visible at top is made from Spiralloy®, a Hercules filament-wound, resinbonded glass fiber development. Hercules offers rewarding careers to those who qualify in the exciting and remunerative field of solid propellants and systems.
