HIGHLIGHTS

Starting with the August issue, Accounts of Chemical Research will be mailed only to those Society members who request it (and to those nonmembers who have entered paid subscriptions). Postcards will be inserted in the May, June, and July issues for the convenience of members who wish to continue to receive the Society's new journal of concise reviews. This change in distribution policy was adopted by the Board of Directors on recommendation of the Committees on Publications and on Finance at the San Francisco meeting. Any member can continue to receive the journal without charge for the balance of 1968 by returning the postcard to Society headquarters by July 31, 1968. In the meantime, the Board Committee on Publications will continue to study plans for a more permanent distribution policy, basing its study on data from member surveys, written and verbal comments received by the editor and appropriate Board and Council committee members, and returns of the postcards.

"The Chemical World and Man," the five-program television series produced by ACS and KQED-TV in San Francisco, is now available to ACS local sections and student groups. Topics for the five programs, each 30 minutes long, are "The Chemistry of Life," "Molecules and Medicine," "A Breath of Fresh Air," "Water, Water Every where . . . ," and "Science, Politics, and Money." Among the participants were Dr. George B. Kistiakowsky, Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg, Dr. Robert W. Cairns, and Dr. James J. Morgan. Descriptions of the shows can be found in C&EN, March 18, page 83. Individual programs are available on a first-come, first-served basis for a two-week rental at a cost of $10. For further information, write to Norman Metzger, ACS News Service, 1155-16th St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036.

Formation of the Society's 169th local section was approved by the Council at the ACS national meeting in San Francisco last month. Composed of chemists and chemical engineers in 26 counties in northeast Georgia, it will be known as the Northeast Georgia Section and will have headquarters in Athens. The charter was presented to the new section at a meeting in Athens on May 2.

Chartering of 10 new student affiliate chapters by ad interim action of the Council Policy Committee was ratified by the Council at its meeting in San Francisco. This brings to 486 the number of chapters in colleges, universities, and junior colleges in the U.S. The new chapters are: San Fernando Valley State College (Northridge, Calif.), Defiance College (Defiance, Ohio), Northwestern State College (Natchitoches, La.), Suffolk County Community College (Selden, N.Y.), Xavier University of Louisiana (New Orleans, La.), Carson-Newman College (Jefferson City, Tenn.), Columbia University College of Pharmaceutical Sciences (New York City), Northwest Missouri State College (Maryville, Mo.), University of Texas at Arlington, and West Virginia State College (Institute, W.Va.).
