Oxidation in Organic Synthesis

The course is designed to aid chemists involved in the synthesis of complex molecules or the petrochemical scale oxidation of small molecules in choosing the reagent most likely to produce a desired oxidative transformation. Areas covered include general principles governing oxidation-reduction reactions with emphasis on oxidizing alcohols and olefins, and reaction mechanisms, especially those aspects enabling synthetic chemists to predict products. Registrants should have a B.A./B.S. degree in chemistry or its equivalent; familiarity with the electron pushing approach to organic reaction mechanisms helpful. No math required. INSTRUCTOR: K. Barry Sharpless DATES: April 22-23, 1976 SITE: Chicago, III. FEE: ACS Members, $145.00. Non-members, $170.00

2 Automated Analysis Learn from the Leaders... IN PERSON

SPRING SESSIONS IN NEW YORK & CHICAGO

A general introduction to automated analysis, the course covers fundamental concepts of automation; unit operations in the analytical process; continuous flow; discrete, centrifugal, and chromatographic approaches to automated analysis,as well as a description of a representative selection of automated instruments. A brief review is included of basic principles of photometry, electro-chemistry, and chromatography and their use in automated analytical instrumentation. :% Non-mathematical, the course provides a broad overview of automated @ analysis and requires a background equivalent to that of a chemistry % major (including elementary analytical chemistry). rhin Layer Chromatography

Designed both for novices and those experienced in TLC, the course explains the fundamental chemical and physical principles underlying chromatographic separations by adsorption and partition TLC and emphasizes their use in predicting and explaining laboratory results. It also covers the scope and limitations of TLC, specific roles of adr sorbents and solvents, physical basis of TLC separations, sample preparation and visualization, selection of appropriate TLC systems for specific separations, troubleshooting and quantitative TLC. Lecture sessions are supplemented with laboratory periods. INSTRUCTORS: Dr. Victor W. Rodwell and Dr. Donald J . | /Π Spectrometry Identification | i—LPof Organic Compounds 4? |J § ,

The course is primarily for the organic chemist concerned with identification of organic compounds either in a synthesis sequence or in the course of isolation from natural products or reaction mixtures. Identification is accomplished by utilizing the combined information obtained from IR, UV, NMR, and mass spectra. Lectures, problem solving, and discussion periods also emphasize the interplay among the four com plementary spectra. Not an advanced course for spectrometrists, the course requires a working knowledge of organic chemistry and some familiarity with IR, NMR, UV, and mass spectrometry.
