Great Lakes region call OT papers The ACS Lake Superior Section invites contributions for the 22nd Great Lakes Regional Meeting to be held May 31-June 2, 1989, at the University of Minnesota. The following symposia are scheduled: Dynamics of Polymer Liquids; Frontiers in Bioorganic Chemistry; Organometallics in Organic Synthesis; New Techniques in Instrumentation; Expanding and Enhancing the Pool of Future Chemists: (1) Attracting More Women and Minorities, and (2) the Undergraduate Experience; Clusters Based on Main Group and/or Transition Metal Frameworks; Chemical Aspects of the Preparation, Characterization, and Use of Thin Films; Novel Electrodes—Chemical Modifications, New Materials, Unusual Geometries; Chemical Processes and Environmental Engineering; and Microemulsions and Fluid Structures. A special symposium, Potential Energy Surfaces and Chemical Dynam-
ics, will be cohosted by the Minnesota Supercomputer Institute. Technical paper sessions and poster sessions will include analytical, environmental, theoretical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry; biochemistry; engineering; and chemical education. Contributions from undergraduate research projects are encouraged. Mentors sought for chemistry olympiad
Europe. In Europe, the mentors will serve as members of the International Chemistry Olympiad Jury. Most students at the study camp have completed advanced placement chemistry or the equivalent; therefore, instruction at the camp is well beyond the level of high school general chemistry courses. The curriculum also includes considerable laboratory work. Successful applicants are expected to have classroom experience, a broad background in both theoretical and descriptive chemistry, and previous involvement with students in special projects or activities. Applicants must be prepared to make a three-year time commitment as outlined above. All expenses and travel costs, as well as an honorarium, are paid by ACS. College and university chemistry professors are invited to apply for a position as mentor for the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad program, sponsored by ACS. Duties during the three-year term include helping to plan and conduct the National Study Camp for high school students held at the Air Force Academy in early June 1989, 1990, and 1991. Generally, in their second and third year, mentors accompany four U.S. student competitors to the International Chemistry Olympiad in

Bylaws specify that anyone who fails to resign by Dec. 31 will be carried on the rolls in 1989 as a member and will be responsible for dues. Failure to pay dues does not constitute a resignation. 64

Student award in polymer science Applications are invited for the 1989 Sherwin-Williams Student Award in Applied Polymer Science sponsored by the ACS Division of Polymeric Materials: Science & Engineering. Graduate students either currently in graduate school or not more than one year beyond graduation are invited to submit a research paper for presentation at the 1989 ACS fall meeting in Miami Beach, Fla. The paper should conform to the preprint format of the PMSE division, and be commensurate with the regulations and customs of papers presented at PMSE/ACS programs. Up to six finalists will be selected based on scientific merit of the submitted papers. Out-of-pocket expenses up to $350 will be available to each finalist to attend the ACS meeting and present his or her paper in the Sherwin-Williams Award Symposium within the PMSE program. The paper must be given by the student, not by the coauthor/ thesis adviser. The award, consisting of $500 and a plaque, will be presented at the PMSE division luncheon at the following spring meeting. All finalists will receive a one-year complimentary membership in the PMSE division. Instructions regarding application procedures are available from Murrae }.
