Baekeland Award for 1957

T h e Baekeland -Award, which i s a d ministered b y t h e North Jersey Section, will be m a d e again in 1957. This award commemorates the technical a n d industrial achievements of L e o H e n drick Baekeland and is t o encourage younger chemists to emulate his ex ample. It consists of a gold m e d a l a n d $1000. T h e award will b e m a d e b y a jury to a n American chemist who has not reached his fortieth birthday on Jan. 1, 1957 a n d who is judged worthy of t h e award. It is given in recogni tion of accomplishment in pure or in dustrial chemistry, as characterized b y the initiative, creativeness» leadership, and perseverence of t h e individual. **Accomplishment" for t h e purpose of this award is t o be of unusual individual merit for one below the age specified, and is not to b e judged in comparison with the work of more mature chemists. A nomination must be m a d e in t h e form of a letter which concisely defines the accomplishment of t h e individual. It is also desirable to a t t a c h to t h e letter a brief but adequate biography a n d a bibliography. T h e letter with any attachments must b e submitted with six copies. T h e deadline for receiving nomina tions is Oct. 15, 1956. They should b e mailed to O. Wintersteiner, T h e Squibb Institute for Medical Research, New Brunswick, N. J.

Columbus Section Elects Officers The ACS Columbus Section has elected John N . Patuson, assistant chief of t h e organic chemistry division at Battelle Memo rial Institute, t o serve as 1956-57 chairman of t h e section. Vice chair man will b e Palmer B. Stickney, also of Battelle. The newly elected sec J. N. Pattison retary is Jack G. Calvert of Ohio State University's chemistry department. T h e treasurer will be John W . Clegg, of Battelle. Fred E. Deatherage, head of Ohio State University's department of agricultural biochemistry will serve his second term as councilor, and Richard D . Hanks of Chemical Abstracts Service will b e alternate councilor.
Mohave Desert Section Officers Donald S. Villars, research scientist at the U. S.
