Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, India

e are pleased to present this special issue on Advances in Catalysis for Sustainable Development, which contains original research work presented at the Seventh Asia-Pacific Congress on Catalysis (APCAT-7), held in Mumbai, India, from January 17−21, 2017. This Congress was organized in collaboration with the Asia-Pacific Association of Catalysis Societies (APACS), Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) Mumbai, and Catalysis Society of India (CSI). For the first time in the last three decades, APCAT was held in India to provide a vibrant forum for researchers in catalysis science and technology from across the world to share the latest advances in the field. More than 600 participants from academia, industry, and government organizations participated in the meeting. APCAT-7 brought together top catalysis experts, policy makers, research leaders, consultants, and industry executives. Eminent scientists gave thought-provoking talks on the latest R&D advances/discoveries and industry trends. Prof. M. M. Sharma (Emeritus Professor of Eminence, ICT, Mumbai) delivered the inaugural address giving a historical perspective on industrial catalysis and its profound impact on the global economy. Prof. Can Li (Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, China), Prof. Johannes Lercher (Technische Universität München, Germany and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, U.S.A.), and Prof Ganapati D. Yadav (ICT Mumbai, India) gave plenary lectures. Overall, 31 countries were represented in the Congress which featured 3 plenaries, 17 keynotes, 38 invited lectures, 175 oral presentations, and 127 posters in fundamental and applied catalysis associated with conventional feedstocks as well as emerging ones such as biomass and CO2. The articles featured in this special issue were invited based on the alignment of the subject matter with the scope of ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering and were accepted for publication following the journal’s rigorous review process. The topics include unconventional reaction media for sustainable conversion, process intensification, biomass conversion catalysis, nanomaterials as photocatalysts, methane fixation via oxidative coupling, and electrocatalysis. The contributions are from seven countries reflecting the international character of the conference. This special issue of the journal is another in a series that demonstrates the global reach of the field of sustainable chemistry and engineering and the many diverse areas of chemistry and engineering in which the field has an impact. We hope that this special issue will be a trend-setter and provide encouragement for future APCAT conference organizers and participants to feature their original work in the journal. Lastly, we thank the staff of APCAT-7 along with the editors and editorial staff of ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering for their valuable help in the timely selection and processing of the contributions.
