Alvin L. Kwiram Festschrift A Note from the Editor-in-Chief When I was approached by Professor Dalton to have a special issue for Professor Alvin Kwiram in The Journal of Physical Chemistry (JPC), I was extremely positive for two reasons. Professor Kwiram has contributed greatly to his scientific discipline, magnetic resonance, a field that we both have overlapped in studying the excited triplet state. His papers have always been educational and represented careful and frontier-type research. The second reason that I felt delighted to have JPC honor Professor Kwiram is that the Journal owes him a good part of the credit for turning it around when we assumed responsibility. At that point, JPC published 3700 pages a year (now it is publishing over 27 000 pages). Within a couple of years of assuming its editorship, the volume had more than doubled. The rapid increase in pages exceeded the resources that were planned for producing the Journal, which resulted in excessive publication delays. It was the efforts of Professor Kwiram and the Division of Physical Chemistry of the American Chemical Society that helped JPC to obtain the funds needed to sustain its rapid expansion during its crucial transformation years. Professor Kwiram has always been an excellent effective member of the American Chemical Society and has served in many important capacities. I am delighted that I could say thank you to Alvin for his scientific contributions and for his vital assistance to The Journal of Physical Chemistry.
