Among the most promising sensors for applications at hazardous waste sites are EM sondes, natural gamma loggers, fluid conductivity and temperature loggers, and thermal groundwater flow meters. Roy B. Evans (I.), now on the faculty of the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, Nev., was chief of the Aquatic and Subsurface Monitoring Branch of EPAs Environmental Monitoring Systems Laboratory (EMSL, Las Vegas, Nev.). He holds a PhD in environmental engineering from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Evans has been involved in developing cost-effective groundwater assessment techniques that use geotechnical and conventional groundwater monitoring methods. Glenn E. Schweitzer (r.) is director of EMSL and is responsible for a wide range of environmental monitoring activities. These include research on and development of improved field sampling and laboratory analytical methods, aerial and ground-based remote-sensing techniques, and exposure assessment methods. He has served as director of EPA s Office of Toxic Substances. Schweitzer received an MS in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology.
