CHEMICALS Amine Boranes C a l l e r y Chemical offers research quantities of three amine boranes useful as selective reducing agents JL HREE
NEW
BORON COMPOUNDS,
all
amine boranes, have been introduced in research quantities by Callery Chem," cal. The compounds are dimetb" îamine-borane, ( C H 3 ) 2 N H : B H 3 ; trimethylamine-borane, (CH3)3N:BH3; and pyridine-borane C 5 H 5 N : BH 3 . Perhaps their most interesting property is that they function as selective reducing agents in nonaqueous solvents. Dimethylamine-borane and trimethylamine-borane are white crystalline materials, melting at 36° C. and 94° C , respectively. Pyridine-borane is a colorless liquid; it melts at 10° to 11° C , boils at 65° C. at 1 mm. Dimethylamine-borane is stable, hydrolyzes very slowly in neutral or alkaline aqueous solutions, and does not lose hydrogen at room temperature, says Callery. In benzene, it selectively reduces the carbonyl group in acetone to isopropyl alcohol; in dioxane, citronellal is reduced to citronellol. Trimethylamine-borane, so stable it can be heated alone for hours without physical change, is hydrolyzed only by the use of strongly ionized aqueous acids or by long boiling in water. Used in acetic acid it reduces ketones such as acetophenone. Callery says that dimethylamine-borane or trimethylamine-borane in benzene can be used to reduce aldehydes and ketones that are insoluble or unstable in water or alcohol solutions. For substances that are sensitive to alkaline solutions, Callery says trimethylamine-borane or pyridine-borane in acetic acid may be used. Because it is a liquid, pyridineborane can be used without a solvent; it may also b e used in pyridine or ether. It gives the quantitative reduction of ferric to ferrous ion, also reduces silver salts to elemental silver. One of its patented uses is as an intermediate in purifying dibomne from ethane. Other than reducing agents, the new compounds might be used as polymerization catalysts and as inhibitors for acrylates and vinyls. Promising possibilities appear to be applications as antioxidants and stabilizing agents, says Callery. Callery also says the toxic properties of the compounds may make
them useful in preventing bacteriological or fungus growth, for soil sterilization, a n d pest control. C1
• Steroid starting material for hormone synthesis, Sitosterol, is n o w offered in commercial quantities b y General Mills chemical division. Sitosterol may be used in the synthesis of adrenal cortical hormones, sex hormones, hormonal drugs, and anticholesterol drugs. Other uses, says General Mills, might include ointments, insecticides, lotions, cosmetics, and veterinary medicine. C2 • Chemical coolant-dielectric for airborne electronic equipment now offered commercially b y Monsanto Chemical remains pumpable at temperatures ranging from —65° F . to 4 0 0 ° F . Monsanto says the compound, OS-45, has actually been in use for t h e past three years. It is said to solve t h e problem of cooling miniaturized and "blackboxed" electronic equipment needed for operation of supersonic aircraft and missiles. C3 • Emulsifiable polymer, Cardis Polymer No. 8, in full production b y Warwick Wax, is for use in industrial and household floor polishes. New polymer is said to offer high gloss, extreme toughness, and slip resistance. C4 • Master-batch compound for

• Polyolefin resin, Fortiflex A500, has been introduced b y Celanese as the second resin in its Fortiflex series. Unusually good flow properties make the resin useful in molding large parts without using excessive molding temperatures, says Celanese. Possible uses are in housewares, industrial parts, paper coating, film, and sheeting. C 8 • Smooth-On is offering an epoxy resin compound for use as a gel-coat for hand laminations, as a surface coating for tanks and barrels, or a s a bonding agent. Smooth-On says Sonite SC-1 can be used with its Sonite L M - 1 laminating resin a n d glass cloth to make strong, hght-weight plastic tools having excellent dimensional stability. C9 • Combination lens cleaner a n d a n t i fog fluid by American Optical keeps plastic and glass surfaces fog-free for long periods, company says. Called Super-Clear, product can be sprayed on a lens and wiped with either a cloth or goggle-cleaning tissue. Lenses are said to remain defogged under extreme conditions. CIO • Dow Chemical has changed the name of its product known as methyl bromide odorized with chloropicrin. T h e product is now being sold under the trademark, Profume. T h e compound is used as a fumigant to protect stored commodities against insects and rodents, c 11
simplifying fabrication of silicone rubber is offered by Dow Corning. Called Silastic Catalyst S-2084, it is m a d e up of Silastic gum, inert fillers, and 2 0 % by weight of di-ter£-butyl peroxide. The n e w compound reduces t h e fire hazard inherent in working with 100% liquid di-terf-butyl peroxide, says D o w Coming. Also, the high peroxide ratio minimizes addition of contaminating ingredients during further compounding. Compound is currently shipped in 1- a n d 10-pound cans and in 40pound pails. C5 • P a s t e - t y p e antifoam by National Aluminate controls foam in paper mill systems. Chief advantages of t h e new product, Nalco 72, says company, are its economy and fact that it does not polymerize on press or couch rolls. Nalco 7 2 is said to be effective under p H levels as low as 2 or as high as 12 and through a wide temperature range. The compound may be applied as a water emulsion of any convenient concentration. C6
• Aluminum f o r m a t e in p o w d e r form is offered by Aceto Chemical. Aceto says its product, more concentrated than conventional solutions, not only gives greater flexibility in making up more concentrated solutions but is also compatible with paraffin emulsions and other sizes. C 12
