Appraisal of the Mass

Introduction

Spectrometry/Mass Spectromeby of Polychlorinated Dibenzo-pdioxins and Dibenzohrans Using New Data

Previous studies on the mass spectrometrylmass spectrometry (MSIMS) of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDDsand PCDFs) addressed the need for MWMS methods, optimum conditions for such analyses, and quantification of PCDDs and PCDFs by using MS/MS methods. The need for MUMS methods was established by demonstrating that the effects of interferences observed under high-resolution conditions were diminished by selectively reaction monitoring the [ (M - COCl)+]product ions of the parent PCDDs and PCDFs (1-4). Other work investigated the effect of collision energy, target gas, and target gas pressure on the formation of the [(M - COCl)+] product ion (3-6) and the quantification of PCDDs and PCDFs by using MSlMS methods. Conflicting data were reported on these topics, which has lead to disparate conclusions. Reiner et al. (4) concluded that differences exist in the collision energy optimum which affects the sensitivity of the method. Charles et al. (7) 1989 did not observe such differences. A limited (
